Run defense is a liability

Cowboys are 23rd worst in run defense. This is my only worry going forward towards the playoffs. The offense is doing their job scoring plenty of points to win an NFL game. The problem has been on the defensive side of the ball. Cowboys are just allowing too many yards rushing the ball. They’ve got to focus on fixing this. The hell with trying to get #11 the DPOY. He’s got plenty of sacks already. Probably a Jerry thing trying to get #11 more sacks. Quinn needs to prove his worth and lay down the law. The hell with the sacks first mentality, those will come, how about stopping the dam run! When a team can run the ball against you, it changes to entire game. It opens up play action pass so a guy like Mills can complete passes. It takes time off the clock. This has been a Quinn weakness with his inability to control the run offense. It’s got to change.

*And* now Hankins is out.

Time for the offense to score and put pressure on the other team to score.

Time for the $40 Million Dollar Man to deliver.

This is why we should have picked up Suh and Linville Joseph instead of letting our our rival scarf them up and add to a position they are already strong at.

It was a fine chess move by the Eagles seeing that we were weak defending the run and taking all the good players left just so we couldn't get them knowing that they would meet us later on and it would be our undoing.

I don't really think there's much out there in the way of free agents that could help us at this point we are what we are.

Quinn is going to need to prove he can scheme away to stop the run with what we have.

Yep, It's the obsession with individual stats and glorification (sack) over the collective good of the team. Id add Kellen to that with his passing plays that gives him the highlight as opposed to run plays.

If we lose to the Eagles, this will be the reason why. If Hurts has more time in the pocket than hard candy at a retirement home, all because we're struggling to stop the run, we're in trouble.

I can agree it’s the top defensive concern, but anyone that follows the team should know the chief concern in the past several games is the quantity and consistency of turning the ball over on the offense. No turnovers in the past game and the Cowboys win easily in my opinion-pull that against a team like SF or PHI and they could be down by three possessions.

They've been better in the last 4 games.... 95.75 yards allowed. Which isn't bad at all. And really the only games that matter are the ones from the Vikings game on, because that's when our turnaround occured imo. The games before that are pretty much meaningless.

The problem with the defense . . . is the offense. Dallas turns the ball over or gets 3 and outed a lot in bad positions. If you look at the scoring drives by opponents, a disproportional number of them are on short fields. Dallas gave up 14 points on 3 short fields (one by special teams) last week and gave up 9 the rest of the game.

This has been a trend. Let's not forget GB had a 3 play 24 yard TD. Indianapolis had a short field FG, NYG had one. The Bears had a short field FG and a fumble recovery TD, etc. That's not getting into all of the 3 and outs where the defense gets a stop and then has to right back on the field.

When the offense doesn't put the defense in a bad position repeatedly, the defense has been stifling. I'm not one of the guys who thinks Cooper Rush was anything other than sub par but he won games because he didn't put the defense in a terrible position.

Even Dak has said he has an issue with ball control multiple times. This is an issue. Either it or the penalties is going to end Dallas' season.

The run defense isn't stellar but when you look at the yardage a disproportionate amount of it is on QB scrambles or QB options. Dallas has to clean up how their edge handles those plays but it isn't the issue that people want it to be. Sure it would be nice if Dallas had an 85 Bears level defense but that's extremely rare. If the offense can just not screw up, the defense is more than good enough to win.

Dallas’ inability to stop the run will keep the team from making a playoff run…I think this is due to the emphasis on rushing the passer and lack of interior lineman that command double-teams and plug gaps.
I don’t think that Dallas can stop the run game of the Eagles and Niners; I’m not even sure they can stop Etienne and Henry.
It seems to me that the FO consistently over-values our talent level on the DL (and other areas) and is not proactive in upgrading said talent. Case in point: why do we need another WR when we have one of the top offenses in the NFL?

I think the only way you can compensate for a poor run defense is with a great run game. Dak shouldn't have more than 25 attempts against Philly.

I said this very thing in another thread. The Eagles signing those 2 interior DL was their way of sending a message that the Cowboys were not going to beat us running the football. And Jalen Hurt's dual threat ability makes him a much better passer than he might actually be at this point. He is a problem.

Since GB Cowboys have improved vs the run, guys are now maintaining their responsibility and gap control in the run game. Parson was right guys were getting greedy and looking to rush the passer and blowing assignment but since GB game they have done much to improve it

I more worry about the pass defense. Short fields and long passes are far more detrimental to a defense.
