When I was a kid (a long time ago), I used to play Atari football with my friends. After awhile, they banned me because I figured out that if I ran the ball at about a 45 degree angle toward the corner, I would get 3 and a half yards each time. So I would do that all game and score every possession.
That's what it feels like with the defense. If all the other team has to do is run the ball and get first downs, you're never going to stop them. They might throw the ball just out of boredom. Of course, the seams are wide open when the defense knows they can't stop the run and is all up at the LOS.
Problem is, it's not easy to fix a bad run defense. That is generally a player thing more than a scheme thing. And now we may watch every team and run it to the corner for three and a half yards every time.
