LOL
So Gerhart was faster than McCluster, Dwyer, and Blount....and many, many others.

I didn't realize Ben Tate had those kind of wheels.

Ben Tate Auburn 5110 220 31 1/4 9 4.43 26 40.5 10'04

Ran a 4.45 40. Cowboys supposedly had some interest before.

Joe, some players just aren't good at running the 40's, but are still fast. Also others aren't fast on the field, but can run good 40's. I've seen McCluster in person and he is much faster than his 40 time. I would prefer scouts to lean more heavily towards game film when determining a player's speed as opposed to a track event. Track speed is irrelevent. A player's on the field speed is all that matters.

Ben Tate is just outta this world.... Phenomenal combine and great Senior Bowl. I would love to see the Boys pick him up in the 3rd round if he's still on the board. BTW, Cover 2 your sig misspelled Jason "Witten"......

I understand what your saying, and i agree with you on that, but to me, you have to have both speed and talent, with what you do on the field.
like jimmy johnson always said, speed kills.

i look at it like this, with alvin harper,he wasnt the fastest fastest wr but fast enough at 4.49 in the 40. To me you must be 4.49 or better in the 40 to be elite. Like when we got felix jones, 4.48 in the 40.

Granted now and then you have players like a jerry rice, or franco harris that dont show good times, but more than not, if you dont have elite speed, you dont break long runs.

Kinda like patrick crayton, 4.53 in the 40.
just a tad slow, he is good enough to get open, etc, but not elite game breaking speed to me.

we need an elite wr/punt/kickoff returner like golden tate, jacoby ford, tridon wr from lsu, that can run to stretch the defense to take pressure off of austin, or roy williams, so the rbs can run etc. along with returning punts and kickoffs, (i got tired of seeing felix tiptoe on kickoffs)

if you get my drift;

Yeah, I understand what you're saying. I think the majority of times 40 times are indicative of speed, but some times they aren't. Felix ran a 4.48, but he plays like a 4.38. Also there are plenty of players that have intangibles that help them overcome mediocre speed.

For the most part I do get what you're saying though.

I was honestly hoping he would fall to our 4th round pick and we could cut Barber. Doesn't look like that will happen now. Barber's not bad though, so we will be fine with him. Hopefully it's just in a reduced role.

You just watch McCluster in any SEC game and you don't have any questions about his speed. I bet his 40 was as irrelevant as any player's at the combine because it's not even a question. (And he has great quicks, too, which is just as important.)

i think with him, its more his quickness and spreading the defense out to get him on linebackers and slow dbs.

I see your point about on the field speed vs. 40 speed, but.....when you're 5'8" and 170lbs. i think you'd want the player in question to have that extra gear.

I do like the idea of adding a big power back ... a good short yardage situation type.

I would love to see Ben Tate in a Cowboy uniform, and cut Barber. The guy had a phenomenal performance at the Senior Bowl and he's in the top 5 in every measurable for a RB at the Combine. We can get him in the 3rd and if we can snag Golden Tate in the 1st, we could end up with two Tates :)
