Running QB's are ruining the NFL

Too much unfair pressure on the defense, regardless of edge players becoming greater and sack numbers increasing.

I thin we see Super Bowls with hybrid backs that defenses cant account for....essentially killing the viewer experience.

Increase first downs to 1st and 15, or somehow regulate how much pressure a running QB can apply.

im sure stats show its even with how fast defensive players are....but Mahomes is a cheat code, Allen is a cheat code.

stabilize it at some point. I can see it getting out of hand, even if not quite there yet

My only issue is QB getting kid glove treatment even when running.
If a QB runs past the LOS, he should immediately have same rules as a RB.
That probably solves it. didnt think about it that far.

then the whole issue of defensive players unreasonably tackling the QB comes up...which then leads back to "if you dont want them to run...why cant we horse tackle them"

it just gets muddier and muddier....its a shame for life.

i agree...if youre gonna run as a QB...take the the hit...but then hits turn into trying to take out the other teams best player out through obfuscation...

its a trash cycle. Heaven cant even make up for it.

They do, once they are past the LOS the only protection they get is when they slide and every other player that slides is afforded the same protection. The issue is the late slides that puts defensive players in an impossible position.

Agreed (and I say this as a Washington fan, with one of the main offenders). Need to change the popular fan expectation as well.

One of the problems is QBs dancing along the sideline, in sort of a wave-particle duality for a defender as to if he is out or advancing. If a QB wants to go out, go out. But if he goes out at the last second and the defender hits him OOB, it's not a foul if the defender initiated his lunge while the QB was in bounds.

Similarly, the late slides are a joke. I have seen fans cavitating about "dirty hits" when a defender (at the sticks) hit a sliding player whose *** cheeks had not even fallen to the ground hit (i.e. literally not "down" yet). It's not reasonable to expect defenders to defend the sticks and then also be able to arrest their lunge in such a situation.

The league probably does not even need to change a rule on this, but just issue points of emphasis, and do it VERY publicly.

---

One area where a specific rule change should be made is after interceptions. I think they say now that QBs are defenseless the entire play. So if a helmet to helmet hit happens during a block it is the defenders fault...even if the QB was going for the man with the ball, even if the blocker is making a legitimate block and even if the QB ducks his head into the contact (like a "defenseless" WR or kick/punt returner ducking his head). This is insane...and is a specific rule ONLY for the QB. Obviously crackback and other personal foul penalties can apply, but with the QB treated the same as every other player on the offense, during an interception.

Yup. Very rarely will a skill player slide. Some receivers will fall down after getting a big first down while being surrounded, but very rarely will any skill player fake slide.
With QB's we've seen Mahomes do it, and years ago Pickett while in college did the fake slide which lead to a TD. I think refs should blow the whistle if there's even a motion to slide for QB's. quit this deception bs

Running QBs isn't new. ......the difference now is that you can't punish the QBs for running. The QB can slide and if you lay a finger on them, it's a 15 yard penalty. Nobody is better than this than Mahomes who times is slides perfectly.

If you want to stop QBs from running, the league has to change the rules back to what they were by treating the QB like any other player once he cross the LOS and becomes a runner.

I would say the league overly protects QBs. Especially Mahomes. This allows them to be comfortable running. If you don’t want running QBs Defensive Coordinators can also help shutting that down. It will happen. The league moves in cycles.

I think it should be an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for QB to posture or act like he's going to slide or step out of bounds and then keep running. Also sliding late should not result in a penalty on the defense.

I don’t see how watching Jackson at Balt slice through a defense or Allen at Buff plow through the front 7 in the red zone to the goal line .

Anyone not remember Fran Tarkenton one of the best scramblers ever . It’s exciting .

It's already been solved. Running QBs get hurt, don't last long. And they're mostly easy to shut down w/ a good D.

Defenses use to make these guys pay for running by putting big hits on them. Now the league has gone the extra mile to protect them.

Agree 100%. If you’re going to act like a RB, be treated like one.
