I know there are tons of runners on the board, so any advice would be appreciated.

My favorite shoes for running are some ancient Reebok DMX. I looked online, but don't see them anymore. I bought some New Balance recently and they do nothing for me. They're comfortable, but they don't provide the arch support I need to limit the ankle/joint pain I get in my feet.

These are the shoes I'm looking at buying now, but they look alot like the pair I already have, so I'm nervous that they're any good.

Find a running store in your area. They will watch you run and recommend a good shoe. I'm flat footed and the store here in Richmond recommended some shoes by Brooks that have the support I need. They have been very durable and comfortable.

Is the name of it, The Running Store? It doesn't sound familiar and I can't look it up online.

What he said. I went to one and they watched me run then handed me a couple of pairs. I fell in love with a pair of sauconys and they are great.

This would be a privately owned store, not a chain of stores. So I can't give you a name. Look around for a store that specializes in running shoes and caters to the running community. If Richmond, VA has one, I'm guessing most decent sized cities will have one. Here is a link to the store in Richmond.

If you know of any running clubs, marathon training programs, etc. in your area, check with them. They will know if one exists in your area. You're looking for someone that can watch you walk/run and determine the pronation of your foot. They can then recommend shoes that properly align your feet and ankles.

If you have a New Balance store in your area, they may be able to do this. That is the only chain store that I can think of that might have that level of expertise.

You might try going to the newbalance.com website, they allow you to search shoes with such features as "Cushioning", "Stability" and "Motion Control"... it sounds like you're looking for a shoe with more stability, maybe one with motion control...

Woodrow - at least try Asics running shoes. I have very high arches and these have been my choice for years now.

Good luck!

If you don't fins something I'll ask my brother. He runs marathons and lives in town close to Rice Village.

Brooks running shoes are the best I've found. I switched from Nike to Brooks about 6 years ago and have had 4 pairs since then. I love them. They've got a good sales section on their web site with last seasons models and you can usually save $20-$30 by going that route.

No matter what brand you get you need to replace the stock inserts. They are the cheapest part of the shoe. Replace them with good inserts. It will cost a little more, but is worth it.

I refuse to buy shoes on line. I'm very picky about the way they fit. (including arch support) I would end up sending almost every pair I ordered back.

I've had to send a few back in the process. I only wear Brooks and Merrell, so I've got their sizing down pretty well now.

I don't mean sizing, I mean fit. Of course, if you buy the same model you should be good. It seems several stores near me sell them. I will check them out.

As for Merrell. I've tried on several different models. I don't like the way they feel.

WG...There are many factors to consider when picking out a good pair of running shoes. I run 30 to 50 miles a week. I love running with my wife everyday. My son runs 70 miles a week with his cross country team.

I suggest you go to three or four different places. Just because they claim they are pros does not ensure they are. Both my wife and I had problems with weak ankles. They would twist outward. We both have high arches. There are so many things that go into finding the correct shoe. Be prepared to spend $150 - $250 for a quality set of shoes.

After you make a purchase, test them for a week or so on a treadmill to make sure there is no pain or other issues. Most reputable stores will allow you to exchange them if there is an issue as long as they do not look worn.

Once you find the correct pair for your foot and body type, running becomes much easier.

Thanks guys for all the helpful advice. I'm going to look around online a bit more, but also actually go to a few stores.

That might be my best bet as I really need some new and fitted shoes.

Those ARE ancient. I had a pair way back when that I loved. I have a narrow foot and often need to get creative in snugging athletic shoes up the way I prefer. One way is adding inserts.

I added a stock insert from another shoe to those Reebok's and the cushion was unbelievable. Talk about running on a cloud.

Don't recall how many miles I logged on those shoes but lets just say that I finally had to move on because the concrete was ruining all my socks. :laugh2:

I find the minimalist approach these days to be such an interesting contrast to those DMX I loved.

If you're looking for arch support without added weight I'd recommend the Brooks PureFlow:

My wife uses these for jogging and working out and loves them. They are one of the few lightweight breathable running shoes that also offer great support. Most shoes with a lot of cushion are bulky and heavy in my experience. Now, there are definitely shoes with more support out there but most are going to be bulkier.
