i'd have loved to have had rebekah brooks job. judging by this she had no responsibilities and never had to bother finding out anything at all about the people who worked for her or what they were doing yet earned a massive salary for sitting in a nice office doing nothing.

i'd guess they mean they were gaining information illegally. i would take blagging to mean to talk your way into something/somewhere you shouldn't have/be. if you managed to talk your way into a sports event without a ticket for example you'd have blagged your way in. thats the only way i've heard the word used before so not sure exactly what they're referring to in this regard.
