A Rutgers player injured making a tackle on a kickoff return sustained a horrific neck injury that has left him paralyzed below the neck.

Rutgers coach Greg Schiano says defensive tackle Eric LeGrand is resting in the intensive care unit at Hackensack University Medical Center and will remain there for the near future.

LeGrand had emergency surgery overnight to stabilize the spine.

Schiano, who had tears in his eyes during his press conference following Rutgers 23-20 overtime win over Army, talked to his team around noon on Sunday.

Because I'm an Army fan, I was watching the play live when it happened. I knew he was paralyzed as soon as he was hit.

It was really bad to watch. Hopefully he can recover.

When I read this report, I felt so bad for him. What a horrible thing to happen to a young man. We all get upset with the play of the Cowboys, but football is just a game which unfortunately is very violent. I never want to see any player get hurt, particularly a severe injury. My players and hopefully many others, are with him. He's going to need all of that and a lot more.

actually when you think of the speed and quickness and strength of modern football players it is amazing that this does not happen more often.

Prayers lifted up for him, his family, and his teammates...what a terrible thing to have happened.
