Ryan Hannam (backup TE) practiced with the linebackers

Is anyone else really confused about this? Why would we sign the guy as a free agent and have him switch positions? It is not like we are short of linebackers.
 
um, I'd like to know more

was this a certain package or are you saying he practiced exclusively with the LB's?
 
this is why u dont signa TE in FREE AGENCY when the draft is full of them!!!


with the 45 man roster Hannam is going to have to play more than BLOCKING TE!!!
 
I think BILL wants to see if Hannam can play on the same level as Shanle and Fowler... I think he can play with those guys (IMHO they reek) and the fact that he is taking snaps there I may not be alone!

I think w/ the 45... 1 player will have to back up at least 2 spots on gameday, why not see if Hannam can do it!!!

might it be possible that Hannam is just doing it because he wants to understand what the LBer responsibilites are better and is asking to just sub a bit to better learn their responsibilities and their tendencies in order to play against them better when the bullets fly for real on Sunday..?

Another thought is that he might be a goal line or short yardage player at LBer to add bulk..?

I can see this, too. Why not utilize his talent at more than one position..? Besides, do we know if he ever did this in Seattle..?

I'll bet he did at some point. Or he always wanted to, or something like that.

Or maybe it's a message to Greg Ellis. If a TE can become a part-time Lber if needed..Greg Ellis can become a part-time Lber if needed instead of just a down lineman DE.

I think any or all of these are possibilities.

Hannam is already better than Shanle and Fowler....maybe he was teaching them something.
 
and if you looked therre is an odd number of LB's so you couldnt do 1 on 1 drills, with hanam in the mix you get even
 
Hannam last played LB in high school. But since there was an odd number they put him in there- probably. BUT if that is the case they needed one more to even it out, why not Ellis?

I read this twice and still want to rub my eyes. You wanted us to draft 2 TEs? Because we drafted Fasano as a receiving threat and signed Hannam as a blocking TE and Special teams contributor. That means we added 2. So who would you have passed on in the Draft and who would you have taken instead that would be as good a blocker and Special Teams contributor as Hannam will?

Or did you talk out of your butt without thinking it through?

Oh and as far as no TEs in Free Agency I think Troy Aikman would laugh right in your face since he had such great chemistry with a Free Agent TE named Jay Novacek. You might have heard fo him. Good player.

A very good observation. During practice, a head coach will often use other players in drills that they wouldn't normally be involved in. It should also be taken into account Parcells may want to evaluate any linebacker skills that Hannam might have as an emergency LB backup--in case of injury to two or more starting linebackers during a game. The odds do not favor such a thing happening, but it's always better to be prepared for such occurrances.

I doubt he would ever see the field as an LB -- even if we lost like 4 LBs in a game, we'd more likely just play 4-3 the rest of the day instead of playing a TE out there.

Bill often had backups play other positions in drills. Waterboy has it right -- this would be to help him better understand the responsibilities of the guys he needs to block.
