SCANDAL: ESPN Told The ACC Which Teams To Take From Big East Conference

The ACC just signed a new deal with ESPN that will increase the revenue for each school to approximately $13 million. With the addition of Pittsburgh and Syracuse, said DeFilippo, another significant increase will come.

“We always keep our television partners close to us,’’ he said. “You don’t get extra money for basketball. It’s 85 percent football money. TV - ESPN - is the one who told us what to do. This was football; it had nothing to do with basketball.’’

Where's the scandal? If there is one, it is BC blocking UCONN to protect their "home turf." ESPN has every right as a major stakeholder (i.e. they are the sugar daddy) to "suggest" what is the most profitable way according to them. Money talks.

Another "scandal" may be how WVU was treated. I feel bad for WVU. They got screwed. It should have been Pitt and WVU joining the ACC, not Syracuse. That would have kept the rivalry intact and also WVU is much closer to the ACC and would have been a bigger football draw than Syracuse. Saying it was all football driven is a stretch in my opinion, though. Syracuse brings nothing to the table as far as football is concerned.

WVU may come out of this nicely if they can go to the SEC. Otherwise, they are screwed.

I guess I don't know what rules would have been broken here or something but I just don't see how ESPN would be in the wrong on this.

Am I missing something on this possibly?

True. But he's up front about it at least.

It is kind of creepy how TV is starting to pull strings at this level.

WVU = Big East - more likely

They will never be invited to the Big12 so you can stay happy.

WVU is a competitive football program but their overall academic standing, fair or not, politics them put of conferences like the SEC or Big 12, they are much like Boise State in that regard.

But you never know, maybe there will be a political hailmary thrown and they do get invited, especially if Boise State were invited to one or the other, but it would be breaking with the established criteria of member schools to be excellent in academics and competitive in athletics, which is not to demean WVU academically, I realize most of those rankings are political in nature and not an altogether fair reflection of their student body and professors.

They will either be in the SEC or the Big XII...of that I am 99.999999% sure.

There have already been some lawyer work behind the scenes concerning WVU and SEC to meet certain criteria.

I think it is contingent on one or the other taking Boise State and Boise is much more likely Big 12 candidate (if not Pac 12 in due time).

True...altogether seperate.

Any WVU to Big12 thing would include at least one other Big East team. I had heard maybe WVU, Louisville, and Cincinnati. If Missouri leaves that would make it 12 again and help with the travel for the newer schools.

That is what I have been hearing as well with a sprinkle of BYU thrown in there from time to time.

However I still think it will be the SEC.

Odd thing now is there is a spark of a rumor that the ACC is now starting to show interest in WVU. I don't know if I believe that as they have never shown interest prior to now.

Is WVU improving on the academic front? I haven't been keeping up. I know it sounds snooty, but I think Swofford (ACC head) has said schools have to be 2nd tier or higher to go with good sports.

Times have changed though. WVU mixes well regionally with the ACC and they have a great fan base.

Is Syracuse and Pitt to the ACC a done deal? They want some more of that NE TV market.

Syracuse and Pitt are there...Don't know if all the paperwork is done but the deal is done.

WVU would be a fit there due to the rivalry/history with Syracuse, Pitt, VT...heck it is the Big East in another conference.

Don't know about the academics but let's be honest...these Conferences talk about that like that is their number one priority but we all know that to be bunk...if they really wanted the best academics we would see them sending out invites to teams from the Ivy League. :laugh2:
