Would we be better than last year? Possibly, I like the moves on the defensive coaching staff, I like that they even have a defensive run game coordinator and Guenther should be good at that, Al Harris is a good coach and I'm anxious to see how he does in his new role.
Player wise:
Wilson and Hooker are both solid
Getting Diggs back at CB will help
Kendricks was a big deal, I think he's still good against the run and pass and should help getting the defense lined up.
I think Sam Williams will settle in to his new role a lot like Armstrong did when we lost Gregory.
I'm looking forward to second year improvements from Mazi, Luepke, Schoonmaker, and Bass and whoever else may step up.
The rookies
Thomas could give us an added dimension to the offense that we haven't had that could help both the passing and run games
I would love to see the combination of Smith and Beebe on the left side of the offensive line
Wright could be a homerun threat at RB
I don't like the idea of no competition at the center position and Nourzad could compete early
Our LBs are a little thin and Magee and Chambers would add depth and they could eventually develop into starters
Lovett is a run stuffing DT without much pass rush potential currently.
- Good job of steering clear of press hands during his release.
- Short-area shake helps uncover for quick hitters underneath.
- Able to bend hips and sit in the chair at route breaks.
- Straight-line speed takes him into top position on go routes.
- Outstanding ball-tracker who can bring it in over his shoulder.
- Length and burst to run down and secure potential overthrows.
- Led nation with 17 receiving scores at a pace of one every four catches.
- Burly, broad frame with impressive level of density.
- Power merchant with ability to drive defenders against their will.
- Opens wide run lanes with kick-outs and wash-downs.
- Stays square to pass rushers in his pass sets.
- Wide and stout, making it hard to bull rush or quick-win him.
- Instincts provide the ability to locate and respond to twists.
87 Jaylen Wright RB Tennessee 4.38 40 yard dash
- Sprinter’s speed for long touchdown runs once he hits the open field.
- Posted an explosive run (10-plus yards) on 25.4 percent of his carries in 2023.
- Sudden jump-cut creates lateral exits away from tacklers.
- Linear runner but can get to change of direction with timing.
- Displayed ability to stay up and drag tacklers against Texas A&M.
- Natural, sticky hands with potential to run more routes than he did in college.
Overview
Broad and powerful with thick hips and adequate length for the position. The Cornell transfer not only possesses NFL-caliber core strength, technique and body control, he also had quality performances against his toughest Big Ten competition. Nourzad has the feel and footwork for all run-blocking schemes and is strong enough to deal with a 0-technique lined up over him. While he’s strong on impact, he needs to be careful about playing too far out over his skis in order to keep from whiffing. His punch and anchor are where they need to be, but the Ohio State game showed he has work to do with twist recognition and response. Nourzad has early starter ability at center.Strengths
- Quick-sets pass rushers with early hands in their chest.
- Maintains extension and feel for rusher through mirroring.
- Firm jab followed by a firm anchor to withstand a charge.
- Fits up angle blocks with inside hands and running feet to finish.
- Power to displace and push blocks vertically on inside zones.
- Pad level and power help stabilize the nose before climbing to linebacker.
- Athleticism to find positioning as zone blocker and get out in front when pulling.
- Play demeanor is active and consistently aggressive.
- Praised for high football character and on-field intelligence.
- Has strong base for his size and is capable of taking on blocks.
- Steps downhill into gaps and constricts space for runners.
- Pinballs around interior while keeping eyes peeled for tackle tries.
- Movements are compact, balanced and powerful.
- Has the talent and technique to split double-teams and leverage his gap.
- Carries a tree stump for a base, forcing blockers to slide off their sustain.
- Quick punch and extension allow him to control single blocks.
- Heavy hands should give him the ability to improve as a pass rusher.
- High football character with desire to help his team.
- Will fit his gap and spill action wide or set an edge to contain.
- Pounces on top of combo blocker to short-circuit the climb up.
- Fairly decisive in his read and reaction to early play development.
- Has a talent for wiggling away from blockers in tight quarters.
- Athletic tackler with ability to find entry points from challenging angles.
- Possesses coverage potential in man or zone as a pro.
