Im going to try a new thing this year where I ask Zoners to make a complelling argument as to why a player should be considered in the draft. Its not necessarily going to be a guy I personally need to be sold, but I want to hear your arguments.

Ill try to do two a week. One offensive, one defensive

For this week on Defense: Sell me on George Karlaftis

As many have said, if they pick at 24, the player will have warts, Likely this applies since there are around 17 first round grades. FWIW if you believe in Kiper's evaluations, he likes the player. I see Anthony Spencer 2.0, a player who is good vs the run, gets 6 to 8 sacks a year, and who the fan base complains about his production. I doubt he ends up the pick anyway. Gotta be offense. Gotta prop up the 42 million dollar man every chance they get.

He is a good replacement for DLaw. Balanced player who is good against the run and offers solid rush abilities.

Karlaftis was more productive than Hutchinson on a per game basis.

Karlaftis (26 games)

14 sacks (.54 sacks per game)
29 TFL (1.1 TFL per game)

Thibodeaux (30 games)
19 sacks (.63 sacks per game)
35.5 TFL (1.18 TFL per game)

Hutchinson (36 games)
17.5 sacks (.49 sacks per game)
27.5 TFL (.76 TFL per game)

I will sell against Karlaftis. He refused to work out at the Combine. He has no moves except power and he isn't that big. These RTs that are huge are going to wear him out. He has one good season his freshman year . He is who I have tagged as a bust. DON'T BUY AT ALL COST. I WOULDN'T DRAFT HIM IN THE 4TH ROUND.

Honestly, the DE position scares me to death coz more times than not it takes 2-3 year adjustment to find their game in the NFL. In other words, 2-3 years of patience before he gets double-digit sacks and makes no mistake, it matters before fans/posters/media will pull out the B card. So as mentioned in another thread, I'd rather trust Quinn with that side of the ball and rightfully with what he did last season. Can't imagine any additional defensive player added ( draft or free agency) w/o his blessing.

They need to really be careful with the edge rusher class and do their homework. The position we're picking at reminds me a little of the year we picked Taco.

This is why I like bringing in a guy like Fowler and drafting a DE high. Quinn coached Fowler and can help transition

I’d have no problem taking him at 24.

Karlaftis’ arm length and wing span is longer than Aiden Hutchinson. He also had the second highest vertical jump (38”) than any other edge player tested.

6’-3.5” at 266 lbs is perfectly fine for DE.

D-Law is listed at 6’-3” 254 lbs and is one of the best run defending DEs in the league.

He's a 2nd round project in my view. He's being way overvalued due to the fact pass Rushers are in high demand and teams are willing to overdraft them and roll the dice HOPING to hit paydirt. He will slide to round 2. He's limited.

we should be looking to draft a RDE unless we plan to move Mucah there which would be a mistake.
