I see alot clamoring for this guy. What do you see in him that makes you think he should be #26

I just don’t see what he offers that a guy like A’shawn Robinson doesn’t other than being younger and a little cheaper

Only reason I can see guys making a claim for him at 26 is that our DTs have sucked for the longest and we Hankins is a short-term solution.

The last DT we drafted in the first round was Pritchett in 91 smh
Exactly.........happens every offseason
The only way this will have an ALL-Pro elite DT is if a mid-late draft pick ends up being a beast they did not see coming. In other words, luck........coz they are not trading for one, not signing a FA $15-20M or drafting one with a first round pick

Pro:
He would be a great 7th round pick...

Con:
A 1-tech DT that was easily pushed around by OG Steve Avila.
- Either Avila is the next Larry Allen or Mazi is not very powerful.

Questions:
- Were his issues technique or physical?
- He has 34 bench reps but the weight room strength didn't consistently show up in games.
- He is quicker and more athletic than most of the scouting reports indicate.

Future Options:
- Gains weight and become the run plugging anchor that some draft reports claim he was in college.
--- Then he loses quickness and is just a run downs 1-tech. Those players don't have a high value in the modern NFL.
- Stays at about 320 or even drops to 315 but develops more power and/or better technique.
=== Then he has a chance to become a high value 3-downs or at least "2 and a half" downs DT.

I watched one game where he gave up on an easy would-be sack because he lost sight of the ball (thought the QB handed it off). Okay, that happens. Then, later in the same game he literally tackled the TE running backside in pursuit because he thought he was the RB.

I do see some traits and ability there, but I’m not spending pick #26 on an NT that needs serious development and is not a heavy snap guy.

this is somebody you take in the 5th Rd hoping he will develop some pass rush moves.

1/2 sacks in 3 years bothers me, seen him quit too many times after his first move doesn't work. As a run stopper, don't see him as elite, really struggled against TCU and Avilia in that playoff game. He is more of a day 3 pick for me, just don't see any rush upside at all.

I'd be fine with him at 58 (likely won't be there), but no way at 26. Not enough production for being selected that high.

Powerful 1 tech with athleticism to be a pass rush threat imo. I see him similar to Payne/Tomlinson......same guys this board was begging for just a few months ago
Is he better than Benton in your eyes. Benton is smaller, but he plays with as much if not more power and is more consistent. Benton is also probably a 3 down player right now, where Smith needs to develop before he is on the field on 3rd downs
