Shaq to sign with Celtics?

I hate Shaq, but i hate the heat more. As a celtics fan this is good. We need a big body to hold the fort down until perkins comes back. Miami is weak on the frontline. I just want him to pound any heat player that comes down the lane. I want the celtics to turn theses games aganist the heat into streetfights. Man, i cant wait until October 26th. Fat shaq may actually be motivated.

How they get under the cap to do it? Did the Cleveland help Boston with a sign and trade deal?

The NBA doesn't have a hard cap. It can be exceeded if the team is willing to pay the luxury tax.

Well...... Normally, you are always correct (shameless mod suck-up attempt), But! Actually, the team has to be under the Cap to sign an outside Free Agent unless they use one of their exemptions. There a few exemption types, with the mid-level exemption ($5.8 Mil if memory serves) being the highest dollar one. I'm not a Celtics expert and maybe MiamiCowboy could chime in, but I think the Celtics have already used most of their mid-level exemption on Jermaine O'Neal. That would mean that Shaq would have to agree to a much lower offer than what he was shopping himself around for or get his 5+ million through a sign-and-trade.

Good deal for the Celts if they can get him for such a low price.

The NBA's contract and cap rules are largely a joke. They should just remove the salary cap altogether.

If they did that they might as well fold get rid of half the teams in the league. The big money teams would have all the players and teams like my Grizzlies would look like a D league team.

Yeah I know about the exemptions just not how all of them work.

If they did that it would turn out like MLB.

You would have some teams spending ridiculous amounts of money while other teams go broke because they can't compete. (ala Expos)

It would be worse for basketball. At least baseball has a minor league circuit to accumulate and polish young talent that is protected from other teams grubby hands. Basketball has some Euro teams, but overall it's nothing compared to what baseball has. The poor teams would never have polished players as the big money teams would cherry pick all the good players like the Yankees do now. The minor leagues are the only thing that makes it where the poor teams can compete.

He is signing for the league min. If you are over the cap you can sign as many guys as you want for the league min.
