There a few exemption types, with the mid-level exemption ($5.8 Mil if memory serves) being the highest dollar one. I'm not a Celtics expert and maybe MiamiCowboy could chime in, but I think the Celtics have already used most of their mid-level exemption on Jermaine O'Neal. That would mean that Shaq would have to agree to a much lower offer than what he was shopping himself around for or get his 5+ million through a sign-and-trade.
Good deal for the Celts if they can get him for such a low price.
