Police on scene of shooting on UT campus

Tuesday, September 28, 2010, 08:32 AM

UT police say an active shooting situation is taking place on campus. Officials believe they have the suspect contained. No other details are available.

Per university spokeswoman Rhonda Weldon:

“The first report I got was that there was an armed suspect in the Perry-Casteneda library. Now I’m told by campus security that the individual has shot himself on the sixth but I’m not there yet so I can’t confirm that.”

Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo confirmed that the shooter is dead, but UT continues to be locked down, and people are urged to stay out of the area.

Officials say it appears there are no other injuries. UT spokeswoman Rhonda Weldon said witnesses had reported that the man was armed with automatic weapon.

“The shooter is dead on the sixth floor of Perry-Castaneda Library, said Don Hale, a UT spokesman. “No identification. Apparently took his own life.”

“We don’t have any report of anybody getting shot at this point,” Hale said.

“It’s not clear yet” if there is a second suspect, Hale said shortly after 9 a.m., adding that the university’s advice to stay indoors and keep doors locked remains in force.

*not trying to make light of this*

Texas is the wrong state to try something like this. I'm shocked he wasn't shot by someone else.

That's not a Texas only phenomenon. Actually, the same could easily be said for the shooting at Virginia Tech. That is some serious "country" down there. I'd put money that the gun ownership there is every bit as prevalent as in Texas.

College campuses, however, don't really reflect upon the surrounding areas though IMO.

Yeah in college, you've got more important things on your mind than carrying a gun around campus... like women.

You've OBVIOUSLY never spent much time in Austin!! :p:

The exact first thing I thought as well.

It was weird since today I'm in class early for a Polymers Science test. My prof gets a text that blows up his iPhone and steps out for a minute. No big deal, we're all in that class because we want to be, not because we have to take it.

No one finishes early, so he calls for the test and then apologizes. Says a lot has happened in Austin since we started the test.

His wife was doing a guest lecture up there today, and she sent him a text that she hadn't made it to campus yet and was coming home. Drops on us that there was a shooter.

Of course everyone knew about it in like 20 minutes thanks to texting, including those at UT. All students who have cellular's are automatically opted in for free 9-1-1 text messages in that kind of situation.

Good to see no one was hurt other than the kid.
