I understand his confusion and he is right, it doesn't make sense. Also, you ruin a perfectly good barrel by using firearm to kill a fish you've already caught. It's just a waste, in so many levels.

As for "you can't have your cake and eat it too", why the **** would i get a cake if not to eat it. Unless, its a cake i bought for someone else and even then I probably would still want a slice, a bite at the very least. The idiom would work best for things that are not edible, definitely not for something as delicious as a cake. Something like "you can't have your spark plug and eat it too".

Little known fact:

The great state of Vermont is the only state in the nation that has a fish shooting season. In March every year us woodchucks walk the edges of the flooded swamps or climb a handy tree and wait for some unsuspecting fish, (usually a northern pike) to swim by so's we can shoot it.

Put in this perspective shooting fish in a barrel would certainly seem to be easier than the traditional methods of shooting fish.

One might think that shooting a fish would destroy the fish making it inedible thusly not allowing you to have your cake and eat it too.

Au Contraire.... the practiced woodchuck will shoot to just miss the fish knowing that the concussion will stun it causing it to float belly up to the surface where it can be easily retrieved.
