Should the Cowboys draft a quarterback every year?
http://thelandryhat.com/2016/04/02/should-the-cowboys-draft-quarterback-every-year/

When it comes the Dallas Cowboys, there are many differing opinions about how America’s Team should approach the NFL Draft. That goes for every franchise in the league. But the fact that the quarterback position is the most vital in all of football is something most agree upon. So why do the Cowboys so rarely draft any?

In fact, the Cowboys haven’t drafted a quarterback since 2009. (Stephen McGee, Texas A&M, 4th round) And before that, it was Georgia’s Quincy Carter in the second round of the 2001 draft!...

...Actually, there have been a total of four quarterbacks drafted by Dallas since Troy Aikman was selected first overall in 1989. Those include Steve Walsh in 1989 (supplemental draft), Bill Musgrave in 1991, and the aforementioned Carter and McGee. Since Aikman’s selection, now 27-years ago, the Cowboys have yet to draft another quarterback in the first round.

The Cowboys current starting quarterback, Tony Romo, was famously signed out of Eastern Illinois as an undrafted free agent back in 2003. Romo’s various predecessors following the retirement of Aikman in 2001 were acquired via free agency or a trade, were undrafted free agents themselves, or they were fresh off a baseball field.

So why don’t the Cowboys draft more quarterbacks? Dallas owner and general manager Jerry Jones explained why during an interview about the team passing on Texas A&M and Heisman-winning quarterback Johnny Manziel back in 2014.

“I couldn’t see how you could exist with that young quarterback and Romo, and Romo playing and being here another five or six years,” Jones told KRLD-FM during a radio interview in November. “By that time, you’ve developed a quarterback for somebody else, because they’d probably get tired of it and want to go someplace else when their contract came up.”...

The model team for the quarterback-every-year theory are the Packers. That's a a franchise that has had two starting quarterbacks since 1992. That's a lot of second rounders for Brian Brohm. Given how close they have gotten to the SB without getting there recently,I wonder if they would like some of those picks back.

The Pats also seems to have s good young QB ready to step in when and if Brady goes down for good. At least they have hope for the future in their young backups .

They only had 2 QB's starting because Favre was great and never got hurt. In the meantime, they drafted in the 6th and 7th round QB's that they thought had potential and turned some of them into quality QB's. Again, Favre never got hurt so their value as a backup QB was worthless. But, that's a nice problem to have. And they were able to trade away some of those QB's for higher picks. I think it was a terrific plan given how few players ever see the field in the NFL that are drafted in the 6th or 7th round.

The Patriots have done something similar. A long standing great QB (albeit a cheater) who rarely gets injured allows them to periodically draft a QB and they end up trading that QB for a high value pick anyway.

We need to find the next franchise QB for starters, then worry about using the drafting QB's in the latter rounds concept.

If you have a good backup you need to draft a QB every year. If you don't, you should.

No, draft Wentz and then one every 2-3 years for a back up. Thats the plan to take you to the playoffs every year and a superbowl or five over a 15 year career.

I wouldn't say draft a QB every year. But take a chance with a late round guy every other draft or two. You never know what could stick.

Its better than the mess we have been picking in the late rounds here lately. We've been drafting about one every decade and that's sad.

If Dallas drafts Prescott, what is projected to be the round?
