Should the Cowboys make a trend of releasing vets, to possibly get on a playoff team?

The Cowboys released Zeke based on him asking to be released. I'm not sure the status of D-Law, but what about him being released/Martin being released so they can try to get a ring as well??? Or any other vet that's been on this team for several years, there's cap ramifications if we do so, but we've wasted these players careers, why not let them try and get a ring with someone else if they so choose! Please give your thoughts

The Cowboys should make a trend of keeping the best players and releasing ones that are not. AS the late Giants GM said, it is better to release a player a year to soon than a year too late.

I would rather they release aging vets than young players with upside. I might have kept Tyron Smith for one more year, but it looks like Dallas made the right decision with him. He played most of the year for the Jets but struggled with speed rushers. Then he got hurt again, as expected, and he is done for the year. It looks like Martin may be in teh same decline. DLaw is probably the more difficult decision, but not if he wants another $20 million per year deal.

The problem is, as always, the Cowboys refuse to use free agency to fill their roster with talent. If DLaw leaves, no doubt they will sign some $2 million a year guy whose best days are behind him.

Things need to change in Dallas.

Absolutely. Last spring when we all looked at the players we lost, it became obvious quickly that we were pinning all our hopes on hitting on 100% of our draft picks to fill immediate needs. Completely unrealistic.

Then on top of that, our last two drafts have yielded some help but relying on rookies - even really good ones - is a gamble at best. The difference in talent between the 2021-23 teams compared to the 2024 team is big. Just look at the skill positions. Big drop off.

And sadly, our FO apparently is once again behind the times and over their heads in knowing how to replenish their talent. Unless they suddenly become humble enough to learn or smart enough to hire someone to help them, I expect a rinse and repeat in the upcoming offseason.

Jerry wants his comp picks. So if they have any potential future value no he will not.

Zeke wanted to be released from New England last year so he could join Dallas for the playoff run (I remember reading there was mutual interest) but New England did not oblige. This move might be, in part, a middle finger to Kraft.

If it's a player that still carries value to the team beyond this year or there would negative cap ramifications I would say no. Value could be you plan to bring them back or likely to get comp picks for them.

In Zeke's case I think it was best for both sides. The team probably felt they owed him a few carries per game, when the opportunity should have gone to someone else. The cap impact was minimal and he really didn't carry future value. Win/win.
