In no order:

1) Philips
2) Nutt
3) Cowher
4) Sparano
5) Carroll
6) Rivera
7) Weis
8) Stoops
9) Turner
10) Singletary

Personally, I would only really be pumped about Cowher or Weis. I think both could come in and really keep things on track due to their experience. With anyone else, it seems like there would be some transition time required, which we are too good to have to deal with right now.

Plus, both are very diligent workers and won't put up with TO's crap. I think Norv Turner would run under a rock and cry after every practice with TO. But, I don't see why a nice deal wouldn't be used to lure Turner away from SF to become our offensive coordinator. Unless Sparano is retained of course. Also, I don't see why we couldn't bring in Wade Philips under the same circumstances.

I'm assuming assistant coaches can only leave a team when under contract without penalty if they are getting a promotion?

I have no inside knowledge, but I think its fair to just completely erase these names from consideration:
Cowher
Carrol
Weis
Stoops
Singletary

Those coaches just aren't going to come in and be a HC. I want a defensive minded coach (I like Rex Ryan, or Wade Phililps) and then possibly Jason Garret as OC. But whoever the coach is, is going to bring in his own staff anyway.

who this nutt guy?

they dont even have rex ryan on there? come on....

That's just a shame then because you knocked out 2-3 of the best options. Of the remaining candidates, I have no idea who you would go for. Rivera is gaining a lot of momentum, but who knows. He's not absolutely dominant or anything. Chicago had the 6th best D in the league. Who knows if he can handle a whole team. What a frustrating situation.

He looks like freaking Switzer on acid!!!

Just shoot Beast between the eyes if Jerry hires this clown!!!

Houston Nutt is THE MAN, who beautifully reflects the essential spirit of
The Dallas Cowboys.

We've found our new head coach.

Don't be surprised if Jerry brings in a sexy name like Cowher. He may have to give up picks, but Jerry could do something over the top to keep the public and fan base interest, due to the new stadium and all. Who knows?

I agree and don't understand why SI would list some of them (well, actually I do understand why, it's because as usual, they didn't do any research).

Cowher is taking a year off, period. Add to that the fact that he is still under contract to the Stealers and it would cost us AT LEAST a 1st round draft pick and that should eliminate him right there. Cowher WILL be coaching somewhere in 2008 but I don't see any way that he is coaching the Cowboys in 2007.

Carroll and Weis aren't leaving their current gigs just yet. They are having way too much success at the college level and are in no hurry to leave what is a relatively easy job compared with coaching at the NFL level.

The same goes for Stoops but to a lesser degree and I think he is the most likely of the 3 college coaches to jump to the NFL.

As much as I loved Mike "Samurai" Singletary as a player, he hasn't coached enough yet, and hasn't even coached at the coordinator level, to be considered HC material. Give him a few years as a coordinator, in fact I'd love for him to come here as our DC, and then he might be ready. There is more to being a HC than simply knowing how to coach. You have to be able to organize, scout, scheme, build a staff, etc. and most importantly when talking about the Cowboys are; dealing with the media and the owner. Mike isn't ready for all of that just yet IMO.

As for Sparano, he sucks as a position coach, why would anyone consider him for a HC job?

The candidates I see as the most likely are (in the order of who I would like):

Rex Ryan
Ron Rivera
Wade Phillips
Norv Turner
Houston Nutt
