'Skins break out in 31-7 win over Giants

NFL.com wire reports

LANDOVER, Md. (Dec. 5, 2004) -- Stop the game and have a parade. The Washington Commanders finally scored 20 points.

The historic moment occurred with 41 seconds left in the first half of the rout of the New York Giants, when tight end Robert Royal went to the ground to cradle Patrick Ramsey's 9-yard pass. Royal's first career touchdown gave the Commanders a 21-0 lead on the way to a 31-7 victory.

The Commanders (4-8) broke a three-game losing streak and broke the 20-point barrier for the first time since Joe Gibbs returned as coach, ending their longest such drought since the 1930s. They scored more points than in their last three games combined, and they hit 30 for the first time since Week 2 of last season.

Clinton Portis, whose role had been marginalized during the losing streak, was again the focal point of the offense, running for 148 yards on 31 carries. He had a 1-yard touchdown run - only the third TD rushing for the Commanders all season - and caught a shovel pass for another score.

Portis had only six carries in last week's loss at Pittsburgh, but Gibbs gave him the ball on the first five plays and seven times in the opening drive. Portis has 1,093 yards on the season, giving him 1,000-plus in each of his first three years.

The Commanders are 4-0 when Portis runs for 100 yards, 0-8 when he doesn't. The first two scoring drives went 93 and 91 yards against a Giants defensive line missing three-quarters of its opening day starters.

Patrick Ramsey, making his third start since Mark Brunell was benched, completed 19 of 22 passes for 174 yards and three touchdowns. He was 11-for-12 and had a quarterback rating of 142.4 in the first half.

Derrick Ward's 92-yard kickoff return in the third quarter was the only score for the Giants (5-7), who have lost five straight and are fading fast from the playoff race. No. 1 overall draft pick Eli Manning fell to 0-3 as a starter, completing 12 of 25 passes for just 113 yards, including a 48-yard pass to Amani Toomer in garbage time. Manning has led just one touchdown drive in three games.

The Giants were as hopeless as the Commanders were efficient. New York had just seven first downs and 145 total yards. Tiki Barber rushed for 38 yards on 15 carries. Jeff Feagles had a punt blocked by Walt Harris, setting up Washington's third touchdown.

The defensive line, already missing Michael Strahan and Keith Washington for the season, played without tackle Norman Hand because of a groin injury. Regan Upshaw, signed a few days ago, played with "cheat sheets" taped to his wrist so that he would know the plays.

Good for Skins fans. They dominated the Giants today. The G-men looked terrible....like they quit on Coughlin. It should be interesting the remainder of the year. Manning needs playing time but it seems like the players sensed they were giving up the season with him in there. I know they have had injuries, but they didn't show anything today against an average Skin team.

The Skins should be able to get a couple more wins this year. It wouldn't surprise me to see them beat Dallas...by then Drew may be playing if we are out of the playoff race.

I still say it was not coughlin but the Giants FO that forced Manning to take over and they have not done squat since then.

It indeed looks as if that and the loss of the DEs has made the majority of that Giants team just quit.

But hey give credit to the skins for taking advantage of it...a win is a win.
