Slow internet connection

I recently got a deal from Cox Communications for 6 months of their fastest internet connection, 25-27 mb/s for $30/month and decided to test the speed.

I went to 2 places, speedtest.net and xfinity speed test and I got only 3.5 mb/s!!

I then decided to plug my modem directly into the outlet, instead of a surge protector and it upped it to about 13.5 mb/s. It is still half the speed of what I am supposed to be getting.

I have a fairly old modem and router (Linksys BEFCMU10 Modem & Linksys WRT54GS Router), think that could be the problem?

Could you also try to plug your modem directly into your computer? This could give some insight into whether your router is an issue.

I did that and got another 13-14 mb/s.

I did some more digging and it looks like they put the wrong internet service on my account. Good thing I checked this out!

Good investigating. I have heard of other ISPs failing to deliver some of their high speeds and try to say that they deliver "up to" certain speeds. Hopefully problem solved.

Could be wiring.

Also, I've had similar problems in the past and Comcast had to come out and remove a filter off of my line to my house before I got what was advertised.

Take the speed of your router's Ethernet port and take about 10-15% of it's listed speed and that is the top throughput you will get. (this is normal)

For instances. A T1 is listed a 1.54mb. Your fastest throughput speed you will get from it will be about 150-170k.

If you have a 10mb Ethernet, the fastest you are going to get is about 1.5mb throughput.

If you have a 100mb Ethernet (which is what you probably have on your router) 15mb is the fastest you're going to to.

1GB Ethernet, 150mb throughput and so on.

Now, if your cable modem's Ethernet port maxes at 100mb, well. You will never reach 30mb+.

Now, one other thing to remember. While you might be able to achive 30mb with a 1GB Ethernet port, don't think you are going to get that speed from a specific server you are downloading from.

For instance. You could be downloading a large ISO file and it could be coming down at a max of 15mb and you think you're getting ripped off, but that doesn't mean you actually are. The site you are downloading from or the path that the data is coming though could be limited / throttled to that rate. You might have another PC or something that you could start downloading from a different site that would also get 15mb at the same time therefore showing you a full 30mb download speed even though a single site won't give you that speed by itself.

EDIT: btw, both routers you listed have 10/100mb Ethernet ports. You will never see 30mb on those. Though if you're getting 15mb a second. You probably won't require faster than that any time soon. It damn sure isn't going to makr CowboyZone load any faster. :laugh2:
