So what would help us get to the Super Bowl?

Right now, I sense that panic mode is setting in. Partly because we're in danger of not having an entire right side of the OL...partly because we're about to lose one of the guys we've targeted to Washington.

I think that having Davis and Columbo would improve our OL, but I'm not sure if that alone would make us a SB contender.

So I'm asking....what all do we need to become a SB contender?

My answer is what it has always been. I can't see that any team in the league is significantly more talented than we are. I think we have all the talent we need. Doesn't mean we can't improve, but I don't think there is anything personnel wise holding us back.

Let's hope for some coaching improvements this season, though. That, in my opinion, is what held us back last year.

... and Colombo to start.

A hammer for a third RB to bring a truly strong running game to the team. Does Duckett have anything left?

Another NT to back up Ferguson and be there to spell him for the fourth quarter. And a true FS to allow us to pull Bradie James out of nickel packages and put Roy in there. You can leave Watkins and the other FS in the pass package to make life difficult for the QB, but still keep Roy in there to make plays on the run.

A kicker. The percentages are in the league backing up the importance of having a quality placekicker. In this parity driven league you can't leave points out on the field. Not even one point. Ask the Panthers who lost three games by four points!

Well to answer the original poster, I don't think panic mode has set in just yet. IMO, we're not about to lose Davis to Washington, we should be able to outbid him if that's your worry.

I don't know what's going on with Colombo, maybe last season gave him an inflated self-worth. Who knows.

If we really are planning on getting Davis, we haven't lost him yet.

I'd say that our OL, DL, LB, and FS have to get better.

I'm going to trust in Watkins under Wade's system, so I think we should target a veteran FS who can challenge (but I don't really want to draft a safety, unless LaRon Landry is on the board, which is highly unlikely).

LT for now, along with LG, and OC are fine. If Colombo goes, we need a RT, and we need a RG. Once again, I'll trust WAde with the linebackers, maybe draft another. For the DL, hopefully scheme will help them out, and we need a backup NT.

So what I'd do this offseason is:

Get a veteran free safety.
Get a RT, or re-sign Colombo.
Get a RG
Get a backup NT
Get a linebacker in the draft
etc etc etc

I'm probably forgetting something, because I have to read Tortilla Flat tonight, so I apologize if I do.

An outstanding draft that nets us at least 5 full time role players of some sort and 2 players who have an impact right away.

And the continued development of the young players already on this roster.

Tony romo, marion barber, patrick watkins, jacques reeves, anthony fasano, jay ratliff, jason hatcher, bobby carpenter, kevin burnett and demarcus ware.

Maybe a switch in defense, to a cover 2 defense. I think this would be better for Royboy, because he can not cover. He is better suited jumping routes and taking good angles.

if i'm not mistaken, cover 2 is what we want to stay away from with roy. cover 2 has both safeties deep. thats what was burning us all year, base cover 2 packages.

I'll admit to serious concern. I did not expect the Cowboys to make a big splash in FA but I also did not expect to lose Columbo (and we haven't....yet). An OL is a foundation element that needs consistency from year to year to really be successful. We seem to be unable to achieve that, making significant changes (more than one position) every season. Frustrating....and not a recipe for success.

I don't disagree with you, but I'm not too concerned.

I am confident that Jones will address the OL.

Jerry Jones saw what happened two years ago when Tucker and Petitti started at the tackles. Jones is aware of the current problem at right guard and of the hole that Columbo would leave.

I think Jones is savvy enough to pull this off.

Find it amazing that some think we've got all the talent we need and it's up to the coaching staff. Everyone who follows the Cowboys knows about our failure on the OL and we can't minimize it. If our OL isn't capable of protecting our QB enough to give him the time to make a play, then we aren't going anywhere. We've got an aging LT, a RG (just had 2nd back surgery and is around 34) and no RT. It's up to Jones/Ireland and rest of this organization to finally get the job done on the OL. We very vulnerable at RT unless we can re-sign Colombo; I can live with Davis if Colombo plays beside him. Otherwise I don't want Davis at RG & certainly not at RT.

Like it was just said there are other OG options out there that we need take a look at but I admit to not knowing anything about them.

Right now the Kosier contract is looking more and more a great steal- and Gurode is probably KICKING himself right now for signing when he did.
