Source: Joe Burrow measured with 9-inch hands at NFL combine

Another talking point regarding potential No. 1 overall pick Joe Burrow surfaced when his measurements were taken on Monday morning at the NFL combine in Indianapolis.

Burrow's hand size was measured at 9 inches, a source confirmed to ESPN. The information was first reported by Yahoo Sports.

Per ESPN Stats & Information, the length from pinkie to thumb was tied for the smallest among first-round quarterbacks measured at the combine since 2008. Ryan Tannehill and Jared Goff, the others with that hand size, were both instructed by current Cincinnati Bengals coach Zac Taylor.

This is one of the reasons the combine cracks me up. Who cares? Can he grip and throw a football? Dude just tossed 5,761 yards, 60 Touchdowns, won the heisman and national championship.

Scouts and GMs who want to keep their jobs care. It might matter. The size of a QB's hands may impact his ability to grip and throw a football. In a game where you have to predict the future of a player you are going to draft, then you need as much information as possible to evaluate that player. You watch a ton of film, you interview the player, you look at the measurements and do all you can to determine if they are they guy you want or not. If the only item a GM is looking at is hand size(or just 40 times) then they are a dolt. If they don't include hand size as part of their overall evaluation, then they are also a dolt. You weigh all the pros and cons of a potential draftee. You just mentioned winning the Heisman Trophy as a positive. Not many QBs who won the Heisman Trophy have had great success in the NFL. Teams shouldn't discount winning the Heisman, but it alone is not the end all be all, either. No one single item should be used alone in evaluation. You have to include every single item available to evaluate prospects.

Source: Joe Burrow measured with 9-inch tiny hands at NFL combine
FIFY :muttley:
Most NFL teams today prefer their quarterbacks to have a hand span of at least 9.5 inches and are very hesitant to pick a quarterback with anything smaller.

Didn’t Favre have the most fumbles for a QB in NFL history ?

He did with 166 career fumbles(he also has the most pass attempts and been sacked the most). Imagine how many more fumbles he would have if he had small hands. LOL. Favre had 1 fumble for every 68 touches. Daunte Culpepper had 102 career fumbles or 1 fumble for every 39 touches. Michael Vick had 98 career fumbles or 1 fumble every 45 touches.

Burrow's tiny hands may not be an obstacle he can't overcome, but it is something to consider. Especially when investing a #1 overall pick.

His hands are 1/4 inch smaller than Mahomes. Go look at ruler and see what 1/4 inch looks like. Its nothing. There is no correlation between hand side and success. The concern is gripping a football in wet weather ands strip sacks. But, in Burrows case, he holds the ball with 2 hands in the pocket and runs it with 2 hands as well. He didn't turn the ball over last year against the toughest defenses in college football. He's still going #1.

IMO a lot of strip sacks have to do with awareness and knowing when to lose the battle but not the war.

He had 4 fumbles last year. That is not a lot, but you claim he didn't.

Burrow isn't close to Mahomes in overall talent. Mahomes is a better athlete and has a much stronger arm. Mahomes also has a very good arm in terms of touch and the ability to throw from many platforms. As I have said, you look at every facet of a QB. Mahomes pros far outweigh his cons including hand size. Burrow doesn't have as many or as great of pros as Mahomes. I'm not saying this one single aspect of Burrow makes him a bad prospect. I just don't understand why anyone would discount it as if it means nothing. It may not mean everything, either, but it does mean something. You include it along with everything else possible to make the evaluation for him or any player.

Actually, coming out of college, Burrow is more highly rated than Mahomes who lasted until pick #10.

Let me clarify:
-Some of the largest hands have fumble issues
-some of the smallest hands have fumble issues

I wish i could find a list of every starting qb and their hand size. Considering half the starting qbs are all about equal in terms of throwing ability, I doubt the top performers have the larger hands across the board.

Now this is well written!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Everything, and I mean everything needs to be taken into account. When you don't consider everything, you end up w/ Gregory and Hill and Jaylon and Taco.

That's not really a good argument against one of the evaluation tools teams use.

Ok

If you have the data to show the best regular season and playoff qbs currently playing, we can compare their hand size to everyone else currently starting at the qb position.

I'm willing to bet the average hand size of both groups is about the same.

Idgad if the nfl uses this "evaluation tool". Regardless there's only so many good qbs starting. There's a lot more average ones and ones that ride the bench. Hand size means very little when you compare on this scale.

It's one tool. Showing the players who made it despite lacking this one tool is irrelevant. There are always exceptions.

Having smaller hands at QB is one more thing to overcome. Not a deal killer, and no one is saying it is, just something to consider.

You'd have to do a ton more research. There are a ton of guys who never make it due to hands being too small for a QB.

It's just one evaluation tool. And it's not black and white.

Yeah I don't think that means a hill of beans. Mine are 8 and I never had the slightest trouble gripping a football. But trying to dunk a regulation basketball was a problem.
