Free agent guard Klay Thompson has agreed on a three-year, $50 million contract with the Dallas Mavericks, ending his historic 13-year run with the four-time champion Golden State Warriors, sources told ESPN on Monday.

Thompson's deal was largely inspired over the chance to compete for a fifth title with the Western Conference champion Mavericks.

The deal, negotiated by his agent Greg Lawrence of Wasserman, will require a multiteam sign-and-trade scenario that will send Mavericks guard/forward Josh Green to the Charlotte Hornets for two future second-round picks, sources told ESPN.

Would be a great move if they used other salaries to make it work than Green. Klay is still an effective offensive player, but his defense has fallen off the cliff the last couple season

They didn't need a salary at all for the deal but wanted to avoid the apron so dumped Green for a couple 2nds.
Once they acquired Grimes, Green became duplicative as they were similar players except Grimes is a year younger and cheaper.

The salary dump leaves them 4M AAV to spend so they can go get another guard like Dinwiddie or Dennis Smith Jr. --assuming no bigs worth salt are taking that deal

Ended up sum total of:
THJ < Klay
Green < Grimes
Naji = DJJ
3 R2s sent out for 2 R2s incoming.

Hurt to lose DJJ because he plays so hard and is a highflier.
But he turned the ball over a lot and had more missed dunks than some entire teams.
Naji is a bit bigger. So is Grimes and I think they felt they needed a bit more size.

Klay is not a plus defender anymore, but he will be retired for 3 years and still a better defender than THJ was at his peak.
And thats who's role/minutes he is taking.

Dallas really needed a 3rd scorer and Klay gives them that in spades. 18 a game on 38% 3PT shooting.

All in all really good work by Nico but only slight bumps in overall talent for a team that mostly needed to fill a 3rd scorer role, get off a disgruntled and expensive THJ and add some defensive strength.
Green's fate was was sealed IMO when he got bullied versus Boston. Grimes is a stronger POA defender.

Going forward they could use a better, healthier version of Maxi and a 3rd PG that can create at a level above Exum.
Might get 1 of those done and hope the trade deadline offers the other.

Right now a top 6 contender type and we shall see how it goes from here.
Won the West pretty easily but obviously weren't competitive in the Finals.
Klay will at least help them get to 100 if they face Boston again.

Not a big fan of Thompson but it’s a decent contract for a guy who can still shoot close to 40% from the 3.
