Southwest Airlines helps Monarch butterfly migrate down South

A monarch butterfly traveled 2,400-miles from Albany, N.Y. to San Antonio on Monday as part of the species’ annual migration to Mexico.

However, unlike most butterflies, who have to travel this long distance by themselves, this one got to ride in style.

Maraleen Manos-Jones, who worked for a decade at the seasonal butterfly conservatory at the American Museum of Natural History, discovered the butterfly in her garden in Shokan, N.Y., two weeks after other Monarchs emerged from their cocoons. Fearing that the weather was too cool for the butterfly to risk migration, Manos-Jones decided to take the butterfly down to Texas herself.

...where shortly thereafter it escaped the Botanical Gardens and was seen riding the grill of a Peterbilt on I-35. The end.

I generally plant dill and fennel, which I love w/ fish, in my herb garden every spring. The Monarchs DECIMATE it mid June!

I'm positive I'm personally responsible for keeping 75% of the species alive on it's annual stopovers in Dallas.

Such a travesty.

Obama needs to sign an executive order declaring the Monarch Butterfly a endangered species.
