We know N.O. was willing to pay Davis, but since we were not going to get any compensation for letting him go is it possible we matched the offer only to trade him to N.O. for a 4th or 5th round pick, thus getting something in return for letting him go?

This is just a random thought no more no less.

We just don't have the depth at safety for that to be a real option. Going into next season with Pile and a draft pick would not make Parcells happy.

Hey, It's not out the the realm of possibility. Pretty unlikely, but not totally off the wall.

Ya never know.

For instance, if Peyton does actually like Romo, maybe there's a draft day trade there too. I mean, let's say Whitehurst is sitting there in the 4th round and we like him more than Romo, but Peyton likes Romo more. we do a trade for the pick right there.

also pretty unlikely and totally based on the speculation that it was Peyton who liked Romo most, but it's speculation season so why not.

I don't think league rules allow you to trade a guy to the team who signed him to an offer sheet for more than the price of that offer - that would mean teams could basically buy draft picks by paying a player's SB for another team.
