Speeding Motorcyclists 'Taunt' Trooper Trapped In Wrecked Cruiser
SEATTLE -- Police are searching for a group of motorcyclists who authorities said caused a trooper to crash and then returned to the scene to taunt him as he lay trapped his wrecked cruiser.
Trooper Brian Salyer was trying to catch up to a group of motorcyclists speeding southbound on Interstate 5 near Southcenter at over 100 mph Tuesday evening, troopers told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News.
Salyer, a 22-year veteran, was trying to identify the lead motorcyclist when two other motorcyclists cut in front of him, forcing him to swerve and hit the brakes, sending his patrol car rolling, troopers said.
The cruiser flipped about five times before landing on its wheels on the median between I-5 and State Route 599, said troopers. Salyer was injured and trapped in his car.
Salyer told investigators that at least two of the motorcyclists came back, but not to help, said Trooper Cliff Pratt.
"These two motorcycle riders got off their bikes, started taunting the officer, pointing, laughing and basically carrying on in a way that they didn't care whether this trooper lived or died," said Pratt.
Dispatchers received multiple calls from passing motorists saying they saw the cruiser crash.
When fire crews arrived, they found Salyer pinned inside. Crews had to cut open the cruiser's roof to get him out.
Salyer was taken to Harborview Medical Center and was treated for a concussion. He was released early Wednesday morning.
Pratt said investigators will get the description of the motorcyclists and their motorcycles when the trooper is able to talk to them.
The motorcyclists could face charges of willfully not rendering assistance.
