-- Spires Could be Forced Out --
Thu Jan 6, 2005 --from FFMastermind.com

The Tampa Tribune reports the list of Bucs who will hit the free-agent market March 2 will grow by one significant player if the team can't complete a restructuring of DL Greg Spires' contract by then. Spires, who led Bucs defensive linemen in tackles with 60 and ranked second on the team in sacks with eight, is scheduled to make $3 million in the final year of his contract in 2005. Spires' cap figure for the 2005 season is also $3 million, but attempts to lower that figure have been made and will continue, according to agent Drew Rosenhaus.

``We are trying to work out a more cap- friendly deal,'' Rosenhaus said. ``But if we can't work out a new deal, then Greg becomes a free agent in March. We have a verbal agreement with the Bucs on that.'' The verbal agreement was apparently reached Sept. 30, when the Bucs and Spires completed a restructuring of his original contract that extended the pact through 2005. Now, with the Bucs projected to be more than $10 million over the salary cap, the sides are again attempting to structure a deal that will allow the Bucs to keep Spires.
