Stanley Jordan's insane cover of " Stairway to Heaven"

This is one of the few rock songs on my iPod. Quality stuff.
 
Thanks guys!!! Never heard of either guy till now. I'm going out and buying a CD of both these cats.

And that's another cover that I don't care for. It'd be a pretty boring place if we all agreed on everything, right?;)
 
I play guitar in my freetime and I have to say...thats friggin incredible guitar playing.

You must not like jazz at all, because going off on improvisational riffs, then coming back around to the melody line, is what that genre is all about...

You're also definitely not a Deadhead, those boys bragged about never playing a song the same way twice... and reaching back a way, you would never have enjoyed a Loggins & Messina concert, because Jimmy Messina was heavy into jazz, and their instrumental breaks (sometimes 10 minutes long) were quite jazz-y...

Jazz isn't my favorite, but when I'm listening to it, I kind of disengage my mind, and let the music take me where it will... when the jazz is good, it's often a really interesting trip...

When I was in college, I did a 3 hour jazz show 3 times a week. Those were the longest 9 hour stretches and to this day I can't stand jazz.

Loggins & Messina never really tripped my trigger, either.

The Grateful Dead were much better as their alter ego; Old and In The Way.

As far as improvisation goes, I think it depends on the genre. As a fan of bluegrass, I love the solos (which follow and enhance the melody).

This is true-- I'd rather annoy a bunch of drunk bikers than sit through 5 minutes of bluegrass...

BTW, it's perfectly OK for you not to like jazz, lots of folks don't... perhaps it would help if you tried listening to it stoned... :D

But how, if you can't stand jazz, did you wind up doing a jazz show?? I don't mean to be insulting, but if you that's the way you felt about it, I can't imagine the shows were very entertaining for jazz aficionados... that's more a comment on the powers that be that put you in that position in the first place...

I think that if you're gonna broadcast music, it's absolutely imperative that you broadcast the kind of music you get into... example-- our local public radio station has a weekly show called Acoustic Cafe... it's got a lot of that bluegrass, and all manner of eclectic, acoustic music, which is not my cup of tea, but the girl who does that show clearly LOVES that kind of music, and she makes it interesting... there's another weekly show called Blues Valley on that station, featuring a DJ who calls himself "Professor", and that guy REALLY knows his blues... even if that's not your favorite music, you'd probably enjoy listening to it...

If every cover out there was exactly as the original there would be really no point to doing covers. You take a song and make it yours...I hate people who do covers and change nothing...the point is for a fresh persepective.

And I can't tolerate artists who take somebody else's work and make it unrecognizable. There's a reason I like the song to begin with. I like the way it sounds.;)
