is there anyone out there that knows Julius's rushing breakdown from grass to turf? Last week he wasn't so great on grass, but I remember 2 of his big games last year came on turf-at seattle and irving. I imagine he's probably better average on turf, but not sure. hoping for a big game from him this week.

Didn't dallas change it's turf in the offseason to that grass subistute? I'm not sure but I thought last season they where talking about doing that.

San Diego was one of the top teams against the rush last season. He had a good game. He had close to a 100 yards and maintained the threat of a running game. I will take that every week. He also had a couple of runs brought back because of penalties.

They changed the old astroturf to fieldturf back in Campo's last year as head coach.

Right, when I say turf, I just mean anything that's not real grass. I think JJ runs better on it.

If nobody else does it, I'll try to remember to do it tonight after work.

Should be pretty simple. Go to NFL.com and add up his numbers for games played on 1) turf, 2) grass and 3) field turf.

You should be able to get information about each team's playing surface from their website.

The baseline is too thin here. He's only started 8 games. I think that before you can make come to any conclusions on this, you have to have more data.

ESPN has lots of stats:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/splits?playerId=5568&year=2004

Type Carries Yards Average
Grass 25 80 3.2
Turf 172 739 4.3

I think this is wrong. He had 30 carries for 81 yards against Baltimore and that is the only game he played on grass last season. Baltimore is also one of the best teams against the run.

When a RB gets 93 yards against one of the best run defenses in the league he did just fine.

The problem is not so much the surface, but the teams he's running against. Teams like SD and Baltimore are great defense regardless of surface.

JJ was actually off to a great start. I believe he was averaging 4.5 yards per carry with 80+ rushing yards at one point. But then the O-Line started to collapse (Parcells said that Rivera got tired) and he had a string of 8 carries where he only gained 2 yards.

Rich........

If JJ averages for the season what he gained in SD he will end the year with 1488 yards. I'll take that and go to the playoffs happy. He was only 7 yards (one decent run for him) away from 100 yards on the day. That's a good game.

As for his stats as regards surfaces I don't really think he has had quite enough games for that to be a definitive statistic at this juncture. We might get an early indication but it isn't likely to be very meaningful.

I think SD did not allow any 100-yard games last year. If they did, it was only 1 or 2. JJ had a great game.

It does seem that JJ looks a little bit quicker on turf, just MO
cuts seem sharper...quicker to accelerate
