West Nile - yikes!

Mayor Mike Rawlings has declared a state of emergency in Dallas over the spread of West Nile virus. He also requested that Dallas County and the state provide aerial pesticide spraying in the city to control mosquitoes that spread the virus.

The virus has claimed 10 lives in Dallas County. Five of those were Dallas residents. Many of those who died were in frail health and had underlying medical conditions.

maybe burm. maybe not. we do know west nile is serious, right?

i was on our city webpage looking at watering bans so i can water my yard properly and looked at some recent postings they had and you know what?

they found west nile in a park right down the street from me on 8/9. no i'm not sure what all that means but i am sure something serious was found within 1/2 a mile from my own house.

while i won't over-react, i will educate myself and take it seriously.

taking it seriously is one thing; state of emergency? That is wayover used anymore.

Like that BS last year calling the Bird Flu outbreak a PANDEMIC.

It is like the old adage

It's a recession when my neighbour loses a job, but a depression if I lose my job.

It might not have been a pandemic if you didn't get it but if you or your family did, then it was.

I got a message at home here in Houston from the local health officials regarding the possible outbreak of west Nile, seems many of the mosquitoes they are finding are carrying the West Nile virus

My wife is trying to figure out how to cover out garden and our pool from the spray. It's fairly toxic stuff.

The virus is certainly centered around Dallas County.

Nationwide, the have been 693 cases and nearly 200 have been in Dallas Co.
That is crazy.
TEN DEATHS (out the total of 16 nationwide) have been in Dallas County.

It is serious relative to everywhere else. It's not some Ebola Virus lock down or anything, but it's noteworthy.

It is part of the procedure for getting the state to do aerial spraying. Without a declaration of emergency the state wont' spray. Perhaps it is an overused phrase, but it is part of the formal procedure to get things done.

If I lived there I'd appreciate a state of emergency. It's better to be safe than sorry.

This is exactly the concept behind the Florida Keys wanting to release up to 5 million "mutant"/sterile Mosquitoes into the environment. The towns/cities are complaining about the release of super modified Mosquitoes, but the scientists are confident it will eradicate and quickly reduce the Dengue Fever/west nile cases.

OK. Really stupid they have to do that to get spraying done but that is the way government is anymore; common sense is not allowed
