For those on the board who live in Texas, what can you tell me about Shannon Dawson, former OC at SFA. He is coming to WVU to assist Dana Holgorson. Just wondering if anybody frequently watched SFA or is familiar with Dawson and his offense. From what ive read he is a successful young OC. Anybody?

I watched an SFA - SHSU game in Reliant Stadium last year. The SFA QB had over 300 yards passing in the first half. The first half. I'm pretty sure they had less than 20 yards rushing.

I'm an alumni of SFA and have seen them play many times. SFA shattered Southland Conference records continually over the last couple of years. The Lumberjacks led the country, averaging better than 360 yards per game, and were also ranked among the nation's top six in scoring offense and total offense this past season.

It's a hybrid spread offense that passes to set up the run (which it rarely does). It uses lots of timing patterns as opposed to 3 step read and fire routes. It functions best with an athletic tweener TE to mismatch a LB in coverage for a safety valve and precise route running, athletic, speedy WR's. It is an extremely vertical attack as opposed to some spreads. SFA as a team averaged 12 yards per catch. The starters averaged closer to 17 per catch. The ball is spread around an awful lot so the defense can't key on one guy.

It does require an accurate passer. SFA QB Moses was the nation's top QB statistically. He had 196 completions on 330 attempts with 25 Td's and 2 int's averaging 352.1 ypg...

There is never a dull moment when watching the offense as it is a quick strike score on any play type of attack.

No idea if the game I watched was representative of other games, but it reminded me a lot of the Colts offense. It was a lot of crossing patterns to multiple receivers coming in multiple directions, then bam a shot down the sideline. Rinse, repeat.

You can see some highlight clips HERE...

They are on the right hand side under "Sports Links" You can maximize them to full screen...

That is awesome. The offense at WV has been stagnant the last few years. This should be exciting. TB, would you compare that offense to the offense Dana Holgerson ran at OSU? Those 2 offensive minded coaches together could be dangerous! Thanks

That pretty much describes the offense every game...

The SFA offense is more wide open... it will wear you out just watching it as it is like a track meet...

Those two should make for a good combo...

Fellow WVU fan here.

I have liked the hires he has made so far.

Seems most have had a relationship with him and are all familiar with his type of offense.

The question will be, will we have the QB and WRs to run it.

I know they just got some QB from one of the Texas High Schools that put up some amazing numbers but was not recruited by the big schools.

We will see, but it should be exciting.

No doubt, should be awesome. I think we do have the weapons, Geno, tevon, bailey, woods, mccartney. I think the question will be our o-line and reloading on defense. Casteel has a pretty good track record though, d shouldnt be a problem, as long as we can hold people to under 40 :laugh2:

In watching videos of interviews with Holgerson and some of his new offensive staff, .. they seem very impressed and optimistic about what Geno can do in their offense.

Plus with him recovering from minor offseason surgery, they will get a chance to look at both new freshman QB's in spring ball. They both enrolled second semester.

Casteel usually puts a good defense on the field, (although he lost some good talent to graduation) if this offense can score consistently, .. maybe we can move beyond the 9-4 seasons, .. to 10-3 or 11-2 maybe.

And maybe win a bowl game again. We were spoiled winning 4 in a row with Pat White.

What I have liked from the interviews I have seen is that he tries to make the system work with the players he has vs a coach who does not want to change his system even if it does not match his players.

I also like that he uses that KISS method when it comes to his offenses. Hopefully that will help make for a smoother transition.

I agree.

I am really excited about the upcoming football season, .. what with the Mountaineers and Dallas both getting new coordinators.

Mountaineers offensively and Dallas defensively.

Last Homecoming game I went to when SFA and SHSU played, it ended in a bench clearing brawl followed by fighting in the stands and parking lot...

I haven't kept up with SFA much lately but I know they have one of the higher scoring offenses in their league.
