Stephen Jones Focused On Upgrading Cowboys Defense On Day 2

Coming into the draft, the Cowboys knew they needed to upgrade their defense. That was before they had any idea that the top receiver and the sixth best overall player on their draft board was going to be sitting there when they made the No. 17 overall pick on Thursday night. Despite the Lamb pick, there's no question the Cowboys would still like to focus on the defensive side of things throughout the rest of the draft.

"Obviously, we've been very up front that we want to help the defense out. The way our board is setting up here we got some really great defensive players still left on the board that can certainly do that for us," Jones said. "I feel like that we can more than likely, unless the right situation presents itself, let the draft come to us. I think when the night's all said and done we'll have a great opportunity to address the defense and hopefully come away with two really good football players."

CB & S will be fine.
However if the get LB Malik Harrison I won’t complain.so CB and LB, can still get a S in the 4th. Burgess could be there as a value pick.

We can focus on upgrading the defense for the next 3 years because the offense is beyond loaded. The next high offensive draft pick we’ll probably need is a LT to fill the massive shoes of Tyron smith when he retires.

safety and corner would be nice, but center I guess too if things fall right, and no need to let it slip since there's only like one or two of 'em

We might need to replace Tyron soon. Who knows how long before him missing 20-30% of each season like clockwork turns into him missing half the year or most of the year.

I could also see us spending a late 1st rounder on a TE soon if there's an elite weapon there that falls to us one year and if Blake Jarwin hasn't magically turned into a Pro Bowler.

But in general, yes, we need to shift the focus to the defense in a big bad way. Based on McCarthy's track record in Green Bay where he picked and developed stud after stud at the WR position in the 2nd and 3rd round (James Jones, Greg Jennings, Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb, Davante Adams), I really thought we'd be out of the Spending 1st Rounders on WR business, and that might free us up to have a nice run of focusing on the defense much more with our highest pick.

But I can't complain too much about getting the best WR in the draft with the way the board fell this year. The CB options were particularly unappealing to me. The safeties would've felt like a reach to me at 17, too, though maybe a reach worth forcing if we hadn't already signed a starting safety the coach apparently loves and prefers. Chaisson would've been interesting and not a reach, but I imagine the team felt like he wasn't sufficiently better than the next tier of edge rushers to justify passing on a WR they had as a top 10 player.
