The jury is still out on how Google's browser-centric Chrome OS will be received by the general public. Google has built a base of enthusiastic early adopters with its pilot program -- which famously provided free Cr-48 notebooks to users in exchange for real-world testing -- but now it appears as if Google has at least one more trick up its sleeve to give Chrome OS a popularity boost. Forbes is reporting that Google will offer a $20 per month package for students which includes a Chrome OS laptop (like the Cr-48) and an online component, which would likely include a storage bump for a user's Google Docs, Gmail, Picasa Web, and Google Music files.
This would serve two purposes. First, Google will be able to expand its existing user base for Chrome OS. For half the price of a typical cell phone contract, students will be able to pick up a netbook with 3G connectivity -- how can they possibly say no to that? Beyond the perfect price point, younger users know how to work the web and won't feel as handcuffed by Chrome OS's web-apps-only limitations. They'll also be happy to tell their friends and family about the great deal they're getting and all the cool things they can do on their 70-cents-per-day laptop.
