An analysis provided by Joseph LaCanfora, beat writer for the Washington Post, in today's edition:

Brunell attempted 27 passes, but only one traveled as far as 15 yards downfield More than a third of his attempts (10) were caught behind the line of scrimmage, and of the 261 yards he produced, 223 came on yards after the catch, with the running backs, wide receivers and tight ends racing through a withering defense to turn puny passes into substantial gains.

I was joking with a coworker yesterday, and said that I could complete 22 in a row if I had 22 straight receivers standing WIDE open, 5 yards away from me... but I didn't truly appreciate just how "dink and dunk" the Skins' approach was... and at 54, I'm ALMOST as old as Mark is...

LaCanfora also offered an interesting little factoid that I'm sure will surprise the Skins fans in here (and perhaps anger some of them, but the truth is the truth):

Moss was dominant in his first six games with Washington last season, posting four 100-yard games and five touchdowns. He was averaging 124 receiving yards per game then, with three straight games of at least 112 yards last October, but in 15 games since (including the playoffs) Moss has averaged 62 yards per game and has scored four touchdowns. In the first six games, he produced nine plays of more than 30 yards each; he has seven such plays in the last 15 games.

Could it be that opponents figured out what the Skins were doing with Moss, and have adjusted?? Mind you, those numbers still aren't TERRIBLE, they'd work out to a 1000 yard 16 game season (but only barely), but they do suggest that Santana isn't the dominant force Skins fans seemed to believe he was going into this season (and to be fair about this, I thought he was more of a force than this too)...

Clearly, the Skins are going to need more production from Lloyd and Randle El and Cooley if this pass offense is to be even semi-effective...

Great work.

In summary the skins are not the team everyone, except Cowboys fans, made them out to be...

I think when it is all said and done, people are going to figure out that Santana Moss is an outstanding #2 WR.

thats why i think moss is overrated. plus he had really only 1 great year(lastyear)

I think Moss is a Steve Smith clone.

Give Moss a quarterback that isn't afraid to throw down the field, and you'll see a receiver making big time plays.

I always figured they'd run into trouble if they started to pile up the injuries... turns out it took fewer injuries than I expected...

Most surprising to me has been the less than stellar play of their starting offensive line...

Too bad he's stuck with Brunell and Campbell, LOL...

Based on what 1 year. If moss can put up similar numbers for the next 3 yeah maybe if he is as talented as people thinks he is Steve Smith should be the Santana Moss Clone.

Interesting stats.

But, don't sell yourself short. You could do much better than Brunnell did last week.

I dunno, Rich, doctors tell me I need rotator cuff surgery... for sure, I won't be able to make that throw from 3rd base the way I used to for a while...

So, let's call it a push between me and Mark... :laugh2:

Another article, from a Skins website... (I'm just going to include the average yards traveled, for format reasons)

Just to inject some facts into the discussion, here is a breakdown of Brunell’s performance against Houston last Sunday. The first column is how far past, or behind, the line of scrimmage each pass was. Then there is the total gain on the play and then the yards after the catch and the player that caught each pass. You may draw your own conclusions here. I find it difficult to tell much from it because there is nothing to compare it to.

Is the point that Moss isn't a 'force' or is it that Brunell can't throw it downfield to him anymore? I guess we'll find out.
