Sunday Ticket Question

I've had DirecTV (and Sunday Ticket) since about 2001. I generally hate DirecTV, their billing and their customer service.

The last couple of years I've been suspending service in the summer and starting it up again during football season to get the Ticket.

However, I've been trying to cut the cord/do other things beside watch TV and I can't justify the monthly costs for DirecTV service.

Has anyone had any luck getting them to provide (1) streaming only service or (2) just Sunday Ticket...no programming package, no access fees, no charges for receivers.

My last bill they were charging me like $30 per month just to have their receivers in my house. Which is odd because I get charged nothing to let them sit here and collect dust while on suspend.

I think I'm going to simply call and say "I'll pay full price for Sunday Ticket, but I don't want a monthly programming package or any sort of commitment. No commitment, Sunday Ticket only....streaming or through the receiver, I don't care what option"

I suspect they'll tell me thanks for my time and send me on my way, but I wanted to see if anyone had any luck with a similar approach.

I have bought Sunday Ticket online for 4 years now without the satellite service. I pay around $200 for it. I believe the NFL has mandated that DTV make this available to people that can't get DTV. Every year when I sign up for it, the website asks if you can get DTV where I live, and I simply answer no and it continues on with the order. There probably is no way that they can verify your physical location in regards to buildings and trees without someone physically coming out to your address to verify it. I can assure you that that is not going to happen. I had DTV several years ago and the dish is still on the roof and it still lets me get NFLST online .

The website for ordering it online usually shows up a week or two before the season starts.
 
I had NFL ST since 1997. They used to charge a monthly fee of $8.99. I used it only for pay per view and ST.
I went to full service in 2004. I went to cancel it last year, but wanted the ST only option to watch on laptop, ipad. They said they didn't do that anymore, had to have at least the $299.95 monthly service.
I canceled everything after the rep was insulting to me.

I may need to try this. My dish is still up to. But I spend a lot of time out of town for my work. Which is why I wanted it for laptop only. But they would not do it.
So I may try this way.
I use a slingbox to get my local TV channels through AT&T u-verse, so I can still see all the Cowboys games no matter where I am. But would be nice to have ST again too.
 
I have a hunch that some of this might be changing....It may just be a coincidence but i find it funny that ATT tries to buy Direct TV and Jerry gives naming rights to ATT...I wonder if Jerry is going to attempt his own network like the Yankees have.I know this would piss off the NFL but Jerry has shown more than once that he doesnt care who he pisses off.

The AT&T buyout of Directv has a contingency clause of Directv securing the rights (again) to NFL Sunday Ticket. Last time around, I believe, Directv paid north of $13,000,000,000.00 for exclusive rights to the package. Needless to say, COX, Time Warner, and DishNetwork were NOT happy campers.

The reason that Directv is not going to give you (or anyone) NFLST without a Directv subscription is that they won't possibly make the 13 billion plus on just NFLSTsales (especially since they give it away for free to new subscribers). They make up the difference with regular subscriptions and two year contracts. And, yes, Directv DOES have ways of verifying if you can or can't get Directv service in you area through Google maps and past cancelled work orders due to line of sight issues (for those in apartment buildings and heavily wooded areas).

It's interesting, despite being the country's most successful league the NFL has the most "free" content of all. I have expensive cable packages largely because you don't get hardly jack anymore of the Mavs and Rangers on free TV. I often wonder how much I would pay to watch the Cowboys if it was pay per view or subscription based. I've always felt it was somewhat inevitable as the TV experience continues to improve and the hassle of going to games continues to increase.
 
Solution, Slingbox, get a Slingbox. Most people know someone that can get the Cowboys games, or it should even work with NLST.
Have them hook it up to their TV, then you can watch on your computer, laptop, or phone.

Only thing is, it needs a dedicated TV to watch you are watching. Someone changes the channel, your device changes too, or if you change it from your device, the TV at the house changes. Even though they may have a multiple tuner to connect.

I travel a lot, so I have a slingbox hooked to my TV at my house. I can watch any channels. There is no monthly fee, just buy the box.

I posted this idea before also. If you could get someone that lives in the DFW area to put a slingbox in their spare bedroom, then you could log in and watch the games.

Interesting. If you had DTV before that should be in their records. If you're getting it, then they must not be checking the validity of anybody's ability to get DTV service at their location.
 
I called them and told them I only have their service for the ticket and that I would be willing to pay to cancel as its too pricey. They gave me the full package (red zone and streaming) for 180. Hopefully this helps.

Looks like the gig might be up where you just had to "pinky swear" that you can't get DTV where you live, as the article states.

This is what makes me so mad with the NFL. I'm a person that is willing to pay a reasonable amount of money to watch my favorite team legally without having pay an unreasonable amount of money for an added service (Directv) that I have no need for. Now the NFL's greed is forcing me to look for less than "legal" means to watch my favorite team and thus are getting nothing from me.

The Cowboys had thier own channel on Comcast in ~2004 and it flopped.

I think there were other factors involved more so than it flopped. I believe much of the programming was to be based on stuff from NFL films. And had the rights to air it came into play also.
