I want to install the consumer preview of Windows 8 but first want to do create a system restore point but for some reason i'm getting errors.

I get error code: 0x80042306

I've tried doing a clean boot, tried disabling all malware protection, firewalls, and antivirus security, but to no avail.

Anyone have any ideas?

You know Windows 8 CP is all about touch/swype/zoom? Do you have a touch based monitor? My counterpart did the same thing you are doing now but on a VM running on his Windows 7 PC.

Have you tried this in a virtual machine? That's usually what I load when wanting to peek a new OS.

Hmmm, the comments on this article seem to think system restore doesn't work on window 7. I don't know how valid that is as I haven't tried it myself but there is also a System File Checker on there you might try out.

Hmmm. That's a good idea, I'll try the virtual machine.

I would still like to get System Restore to work as I have never created a restore point to date.

I've already ran the SFC scan and it found nothing. I just tried booting up in safe mode also to try and create one but the option is gone when I go into System properties.

Can I uninstall Windows 8 Consumer Preview?
No. To go back to your previous version of Windows, you'll need to reinstall it from the recovery or installation media that came with your PC; typically DVD media. If you don’t have recovery media you might be able to create it from a recovery partition on your PC using software provided by your PC manufacturer. Check the support section of your PC manufacturer’s website for more information. After you install Windows 8, you won’t be able to use the recovery partition on your PC to go back to your previous version of Windows.

definately go the VM route so you don't lose your current setup.

Good looking out!

That's the first time I've ever used a VM and it was pretty sweet. Was obviously a little slower than what the regular OS would be but it did the trick. From the little I played around with W8 I liked what I saw.
