T.O. to the Bengals report not true

7/23/2010 8:14:52 PM

TMZ.com reported earlier tonight that wide receiver Terrell Owens is "very close" to signing a contract with the Cincinnati Bengals according to sources close to the deal.

Bengals wide receiver Chado Ochocinco has been lobbying for the Bengals to sign Owens.

But Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer via Twitter reported In regards to the TMZ to Bengals report, two sources on both sides that I've talked to have said "not true."

Owens visited the Bengals but they opted to sign Antonio Bryant instead.

Carson Palmer has pushed for T.O. signing
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on July 23, 2010 10:53 PM ET
Following a TMZ report that T.O. was "very close" to signing, a source close to the situation told PFT that it wasn't true. Carson Palmer reportedly hopes that changes soon.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Palmer and Owens have been working out regularly together in California, and Palmer has been "highly impressed." The quarterback reportedly told the Bengals that Owens could be an asset to the team.

(Apparently Palmer just doesn't have enough reality show divas in his life.)

It sounds like the Bengals are at least contemplating a move. Perhaps they want to see how Antonio Bryant and Matt Jones look first.

Jones resides squarely on the roster bubble, and ESPN's Chris Mortensen writes that Bryant's knee was still a problem during the offseason. Should Bryant's knee not recover, perhaps the Bengals would be ready to take on another problem waiting to happen.

this was an earlier report on T O; from PFT
T.O. to Bengals report dismissed
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on July 23, 2010 8:46 PM ET
The burgeoning sports staff at TMZ came out with a report Friday night that Terrell Owens was "very close" to a deal with the Bengals.

A league source with knowledge of the situation tells PFT that the report is untrue. Then again, there was misinformation circulated about Owens' signing with the Cowboys just before it actually happened.

The Bengals hosted Owens for a visit earlier this offseason, but signed Antonio Bryant instead. They've since drafted Jordan Shipley in the third round and coach Marvin Lewis recently called receiver Andre Caldwell the most improved player on the team.

We don't doubt the Bengals are just wacky enough to make the move anyway, but it's an awkward fit.

UPDATE: Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer also says sources on both sides say the report is "not true."

Man if the Bengals signed TO, I would almost consider the Bengals must see TV. Bryant, Ocho, and TO. Surely that would be entertaining.

well even an old TO could be a decent option with Abryant on the other side and chad in the slot, but thats way too many divas on one team

TMZ report on TO and Bengals dismissed

TMZ reported Friday night that Terrell Owens is “very close” to signing with the Bengals. Those reports are false according to two sources with knowledge of the situation.

Owens did visit here and Cincinnati remains one of the teams he would like to sign with based on the fact that he views them as a contender.

Said Owens at the Madden ’11 Pigskin Pro-Am in Malibu on Friday in an interview on NFL Network: “There are some teams interested. If one of those teams come forward it has to be the right situation. I’m going into my 15th season. It has to be a team that wants to have me and feels like I can be an asset to their team. Other than that I’m still working out, staying in shape and I’ll be ready.”

While we still view the likelihood as a long shot, a couple of league observers have noted that the Owens camp denied reports of a deal being close with Dallas until it happened. It’s not feasible at the moment, but if Antonio Bryant struggles due to last year’s knee problems, the likelihood of an Owens signing does increase.

Another factor is that ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Friday night that Carson Palmer has been working out with Owens in California and has been impressed. Palmer did talk with Owens before his visit here in March along with Bryant. Owens agent, Drew Rosenhaus, was in town this week but it was more to touch base with Chad Ochocinco.
