TCU says no to 2011 rematch with Wisconsin
“Anytime. Anyplace. Anywhere.”
Those were the famous words of TCU Athletic Director Chris Del Conte in regards to his willingness to play Ohio State on any stage after OSU president E. Gordon Gee referred to the TCU’s of the world as “The Little Sisters of the Poor”.
Turns out, those comments were meant solely for Ohio State.
According to a report from ESPNDallas.com, an unspecified third party came to Del Conte and Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema about the possibility of a Rose Bowl rematch between the Horned Frogs and the Badgers in Madison to open the 2011 season.
It would be a one-time game and not a home-and-home series.
Bielema, wanting to get another swing at TCU, could barely contain his enthusiasm.
Del Conte? Yeah, not so much.
“We already have Baylor for our opening game,” Del Conte said. “A team supposedly Wisconsin played last year doesn’t want to go back there [UNLV]. A third party was shopping the game around to other teams. I have no interest in playing a one-[time] game*.
“It was a very quick conversation with a third party. I want to be clear: I never spoke to the Wisconsin athletic director or football coach.”
TCU is already losing a home game against Boise State this year and will have one neutral site game against BYU in the Dallas Cowboys Stadium.
In hindsight, I believe Del Conte’s quote actually read “Anytime. Anyplace. Anywhere… provided it works for us.”
*Note: unless that one-time game was against Ohio State, in which Del Conte eagerly said “of course”.
