AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- University of Texas regents agreed Thursday to extend football coach Mack Brown's contract by four years to 2020, a move school officials hope will assure long-term stability for a program eager to get back in the chase for national championships.

Brown, who is paid $5.2 million a year, won't get any more money out of the new deal, but he will continue getting annual raises of $100,000 per his current contract. The deal includes a $3.5 million buyout that drops every year he stays with Texas.

The regents, who met via telephone conference, deliberated in private for about 40 minutes before unanimously approving the changes.

After the regents voted, Texas President Williams Powers Jr. and athletic director DeLoss Dodds said school officials want Brown to coach the Longhorns for as long as he wants to. High school recruits can sign scholarship letters-of-intent on Feb. 1.

Rumors had cropped up after last season that Brown might retire or be forced out. Powers on Thursday dismissed such speculation as completely unfounded.

Question for the Longhorn fans out there.

Are they tired of Mack Brown and want a different HC?

Now I know you will have fans of all stripes that want a coaches head or others that will defend a coach no matter what...but what is the majority thinking concerning Brown and the HC job.

I have gotten the impression over the years that many would rather have a different HC there because they think the team under performs with the amount of talent they recruit each year.

I won't speak for others but I love having Mack Brown as the HC of UT.

Brown brings value far, FAR beyond just coaching.

Since he got there that program has been one the winningest on the field while boosting the overall athletic dept revenue to outer-worldly levels.

Taking the Longhorn Network out of the equation, revenues now exceed the national runner up program by an estimated 17 million a year. When you look at it on those terms--plus the overall winning--his raises, at least to UT brass, are warranted.

I often hear the argument on how well they recruit and why they don't do better. But I saw a list of the top recruiting classes over the last 10 years and UT is right there in the mix with about 7-8 other programs. They've played in two title games and won one. That's on par with the other teams with those level of recruits.

Take Rivals, for example. Although UT almost always seems to have a great recruiting class, they have not had the top rated class one time in the last 10 years 2003-2012. They've finished 10th or lower 4 times out of those 10.
So when I hear they have the top class every year, I call bs. They recruit extremely well, but so do other schools.

I'm a Mack Brown fan. I value integrity in the Program over a lot of other things. I believe he is a straight shooter. The time will come that he steps down but I don't necessarily think that it has to be next season, per say.

ask me again in November.

It's a love/hate thing in some respects...

Mack is a man of impeccable character and a fantastic recruiter...

I think that last year with his willingness to finally break ties with his longtime assistant coaches spoke volumes to the regents. He made some good hires and needs a couple of years to get them in place...

Most old-time Texas fans still revere Darrell Royal and his reign. He was an aggressive cutthroat coach (as were many in that day). The problem with that is that those rules no longer apply. Royal was ruthless in his recruiting and would give any kid a scholarship to keep them away from rivals. Back in the day Texas would suit up 80+ players. In keeping his legacy, he cost a lot of kids playing time at other Universities.

Mack will leave UT one day with a great rep an honorable career. He deserves it...

When he does leave, give me a Jimmy Johnson type... ;)
