The final day of full pads practice and things on the field have finally slowed down. Not so in the city of Mobile as plenty of NFL decision makers remain and the buzz is swirling.
Last night we spoke about Tyron Smith and his draft projection, mentioning the USC underclassman landing as early as the ninth spot to the Dallas Cowboys. A source from the team we spoke with today told us that while they feel Smith is a terrific prospect the team is leaning towards acquiring an offensive tackle that is ready to start from day one. With the lockout looming that’s unlikely to be Smith who won’t be able to participate in rookie mini-camp or OTA’s the way things look. Bottom line, don’t expect Dallas to pull the trigger Smith with the 9th pick.

As we twittered earlier, quarterback Colin Kaepernick continues to impress scouts. Two quarterback needy teams, the Minnesota Vikings and Miami Dolphins look to be seriously considering the signal caller in round two.

I think it means if we are going to take an OT in rd 1, it is going to be somebody we expect to start from day 1..I guess we don't think Smith can do that

I hope you are right, because that isn't how you get great players, by passing on a player with a high ceiling like Smith. Dallas' best players on it's offensive line were drafted by the team (Gurode and Free). I want to dominate up front, and this team has the skill players and QB to win big. However, the offensive line is holding the skill guys back, imo. An OT (Smith or Sherrod could be plugged in at RT. A DE isn't going to have all that off season, either. A DE is going to have to start, too.

By the way, I saw Jordan in your mock. Nice job. If you go defense, that is a great choice. Choosing between Jordan or Smith or Sherrod is going to be a win/lose situation. However, the 49ers could make the choice for the Cowboys if they took Jordan. I'm just thinking out loud.

If a done Colombo and the sixth round pick from Pittsburgh can start for Dallas, Smith sure can. Sherrod is doing very well at RT in the Senior Bowl, and he is a legit NFL LT. He's added some weight, too. I'm sure Smith will add weight for the combine and perhaps some more by April.

Derek Sherrod is for sure ready to go at RT in the NFL. I'd be happy with him, too.

Unless I am misreading this, they never said they spoke with the cowoboys, just a team. So that could mean whatever.

Smith will need time to beef up. So he could not start day one. Which is what you expect from a top 10 pick.

Does not mean a FA. It could mean another OT in the draft they feel can step in and start.

I think some view Smith as a player with great upside but will require some time before he is ready to be a starter.

That's what I take away from it anyway.
