Dan Orlovsky Named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (November 1, 2004) - University of Connecticut quarterback Dan Orlovsky (Shelton, Conn.) was named the BIG EAST’s Offensive Player of the Week on Monday morning. It is his second such honor of the season, having also earned it on Sept. 27 following UConn’s 40-3 win over Army.

Orlovsky becomes just the fifth player in BIG EAST history to be named the league’s Offensive Player of the Week outright in a losing effort and just the second since 1996. The Huskies fell, 42-30 at Syracuse on Saturday. The last such instance came on Nov. 11, 2002 when Virginia Tech wide receiver Ernest Wilford took the award after catching eight passes for 279 yards and four touchdowns in a 50-42 triple overtime Hokie loss at Syracuse.

To earn the honor, Orlovsky set a school, BIG EAST, and Carrier Dome record with 39 completions, good for 445 yards, tying for the fifth-best single game performance in BIG EAST history. The 445 passing yards set another school record while his completion percentage of 76.5-percent (39-for-51) was the fifth-best single game total in UConn history. Orlovsky also added three touchdowns in the game while throwing a pair of interceptions. Orlovsky’s 39 completions in the game are the most by any player in the nation thus far in 2004 other than Texas Tech’s Sonny Cumbie. The 445 passing yards are the seventh best total this year nationally and is the best outing for any quarterback in 2004 against a BCS Conference opponent.

During the game, Orlovsky broke the UConn career records for passing yardage (9,715), completions (821) and total offense (9,419). He also extended the school career records he already held for touchdown passes (78) and passing attempts (1,409).

Orlovsky ranks fourth in the nation in passing yardage, sixth in passing, ninth in total offense, 12th in touchdown passes and 21st in passing efficiency. He ranks second amongst all active players with his 78 career touchdown passes and sixth with his 9,715 career passing yards.

UConn will return to action on Nov. 13 when the Huskies (5-3, 2-3 BIG EAST) travel to Atlanta to face Georgia Tech (4-3, 3-3 ACC). The game will start at 1:00 p.m. and will not be televised.
