Tonight the company my wife works for had their Christmas dinner. Long story, but the Company owner had an emergency during the holidays and they couldn't hold this dinner until into the new year and tonight ended up as the night. I know, that's weird.

So we head to the Viscount Suites Hotel for this dinner and there is a wedding just finishing up at the same time. We're all seated waiting for people to show up and into our dining room comes Meadowlark Lemon of Harlem Globetrotters basketball fame. I recognized him immediately and called out his name.

He looks great! I don't know how old he is, but he has to be in his 60's at least. I swear he looks in his late 40's at the most. He still has that great smile. I shook his hand and it is huge. He was so friendly to everyone.

Turns out he is now an evangelical minister and performed the wedding that was ending as we arrived.

One guy at the dinner asked him about the And 1 street ball players on ESPN 2. He didn't think much of them. I was a little shocked at that.

Those that knew him all told their favorite tricks and I mentioned that I had seen him in El Paso, TX when I was a kid. He said, "did you have fun?" I said, "I sure did." He grinned, winked and said, "so did I." Then waved to everyone and left.

One of my childhood heroes and he was just as nice as I have always imagined.

I told everyone my favorite Meadowlark memory and it was from that night in El Paso. He left the court and sat on 2 ladies laps. The Referee was blowing his whistle and telling him to get on the court. He did, with a lady under each arm. The Ref then blew his whistle again and told him to get those women off the court. Meadowlark had his great big grin and he said, "try it you'll like it." I laughed the rest of the night.

Great memories and a real honor to meet him.

I used to love watching the Globetrotters when they came on ABC's Wild World of Sports every year when I was a kid. Curly Neal was always my favorite.

How cute, Hostile. Glad you got to meet one of your childhood heros... :)

I've never seen the globetrotters live, but I think those espn streetballers are nothing like the globetrotters. In a pinch, the globe trotters can actually play basketball. The streetballers would get run out of the gym.
