The Commanders could cut the next Andre Johnson
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on July 22, 2010 10:30 AM ET
Back in March of 2009, Albert Haynesworth was asked to explain why his agent met with Commanders owner Dan Snyder at the NFL Scouting Combine, which appeared to be a crystal clear case of tampering.

The official explanation at the time: Haynesworth's agent Chad Speck and Snyder were discussing wide receiver Malcolm Kelly.

"Chad told me he met with the Commanders at the Combine," Haynesworth said. "But they were talking about Malcolm [Kelly] and how he could become the next Andre Johnson and stuff like that."

Well, the rest of the NFL may get the chance to sign the next Andre Johnson shortly. Ryan O'Halloran of Comcast Sportsnet Washington predicted on Wednesday Kelly won't even make the team because of his injury issues and lack of special teams value.

That information makes it all the more ridiculous the Commanders got off the hook for tampering using the Kelly excuse. It also points out how Washington bungled the second round of that draft.

The team selected Devin Thomas 15 spots ahead of DeSean Jackson, and tight end Fred Davis one spot ahead of Jackson before grabbing Kelly three picks later. (We like Davis plenty, but they still passed on Jackson twice.)

Vinny Cerrato may be gone, but his legacy continues to live on.

Malcolm Kelly-WR- Commanders Jul. 22 - 9:54 am et

Comcast Sportsnet Washington's Ryan O'Halloran speculates that WR Malcolm Kelly's roster spot could be in jeopardy this summer.

The speed-challenged Kelly has given the Commanders little over his first two seasons, and he doesn't contribute on special teams. The new regime has nothing invested in him, so his second-round pedigree may be a non-factor. With Chris Cooley expected to play a Dallas Clark-type slot role in two-tight end sets, Kelly would be bench-bound even if he sticks.

Kelly had all the talent to be a great WR in the NFL, but everyone and their grandmother knew his injury issues were going to kill his career. I was dumbfounded (and damn happy) when the Commanders drafted Kelly.

Holy crap we need to bump the rue threads from OU fanboys.

Wasn't there a poster named Dallas who lost his mind if anyone dared to say anything that wasn't completely flattering about Malcolm Kelly?

Or am I thinking of someone else?

I may end up eating my words here, but I don't recall OU fans pumping up Kelly that much.

As an OU fan myself, I was hoping that the Cowboys would pass on him and I was happy to see the Redsk*ns draft him.

Anyone who watched a lot of OU games could see that while he was great when healthy, his legs were a huge concern and he would also disappear in big games.

Sucks for them, but we have had our share of 1st and 2nd round talent not pan out...Barbie for one, well at least he contributed somewhat.

Thats why these draft day grades are useless. It takes two to three years for these guys to show if they can really make it in the NFL.

The Felix hate around this board was unfathomable.

Lots of crow to be served.

I a little more than lukewarm on Felix, but when we drafted him it just made more and more sense to me.

I was never high on Kelly. Tall WR's who can't get seperation usually don't succeed in the NFL. They kick *** in college because you get defensive backs that are not that good and can be like 5'7" tall for some teams. But in the NFL, even the bad corners would be gods in NCAA.
