If anything this week was a slap in the head, a reality check. Many teams in the NFL improve in the offseason. The Saints did, The Cowboys didn't. The Cowboys are not a very good football team right now. They were not playing the 2023 New Orleans Saints. And they are not the 2023 Cowboys either.
Look at the RB situation. Come on, seriously. They should have drafted one. They didn't. Now they have Zeke, again, Deuce Vaughn and Rico Dowdle. These are not good RBs. Why would we think that the Cowboys offense can run the football?
Look at the WRs. Outside of CeeDee, who scares you? Guys who looked good in preseason against scrubs from other teams are not convincing.
Look at the TEs today. No Ferguson so we had Schoonmaker who is not considered a receiver, a callup from the practice squad and a guy with two last names who probably should be on the practice squad.
Look at the OL. A rookie LT who needs development. An all Pro LG, a rookie C, an aging RG and a guy who has not been the same since he was injured in 2022.
What is the correct expectation of this bunch on offense? Does anyone think they can score 45 points against a quality defense?
Now look at the defense. I admit I am disappointed by the play of our safeties, but we have not had that rangy centerfielder type safety in a long time. The safety support for the run has been awful. We are down an all-pro CB who was replaced by a rookie, who appeared to play well in preseason but he is a rookie and he is getting picked on. The LBs are improved but not enough to compensate for the DL which is frankly, not going to scare anyone who isn't missing two starters on their OL. Jordan Phillips was not a good player. He was and is a JAG. He is still a JAG. Linval Joseph was a good player but he is old. Mazi Smith is better but still not very good. Osa is a good player but not good enough. Lawrence is a good player but not great anymore. Kneeland is a rookie who plays the run okay, but is not a pass rusher. Golston is a DE converted to tackle and he isn't very good at either position. Micah is the only guy teams have to plan for and it is easy when there is no one else to help him. The Cowboys lost Armstrong san Fowler and did not replace tham until the season began and that guy is on the practice squad and we have no idea if he can still play. And even if he can, I don't think it will make much difference.
Look at this roster with a critical eye, not with the eye Jerry gave you. You will realize this team has a lot of flaws and teams will expose those flaws this season.
