When a team uses their 1st round pick on a skill player on offense or CB on defense then the best scenario is you have to pay them a huge contract four seasons later if you want to keep him. Otherwise, you used your premium pick to rent an elite player for 4 seasons.
A seemingly unrelated fact is the D-lines for the Cowboys championship teams of the 70's and early 90's both had multiple starters that were drafted #1 or #2 overall. The 70's team had Too Tall Jones and Randy White. The 90's team had Russell Maryland and Tony Casillas. I'm not advocating moving to that position to get D-linemen, I'm just saying that if you want to build a successful D-line, you must make a commitment to acquire elite talent through the draft and/or free agency.
Closely related to the point I want to make, the O-line the Cowboys had earlier in the 2010's was composed of three All pros, all 1st round picks.
The Cowboy should be using their 1st round picks on linemen and use their 2nd and 3rds if they want to stock up on skill players and CB's. I'm not saying that every lineman must be a 1st round pick but your lines should have a couple peppered in on each side.
