When a team uses their 1st round pick on a skill player on offense or CB on defense then the best scenario is you have to pay them a huge contract four seasons later if you want to keep him. Otherwise, you used your premium pick to rent an elite player for 4 seasons.

A seemingly unrelated fact is the D-lines for the Cowboys championship teams of the 70's and early 90's both had multiple starters that were drafted #1 or #2 overall. The 70's team had Too Tall Jones and Randy White. The 90's team had Russell Maryland and Tony Casillas. I'm not advocating moving to that position to get D-linemen, I'm just saying that if you want to build a successful D-line, you must make a commitment to acquire elite talent through the draft and/or free agency.

Closely related to the point I want to make, the O-line the Cowboys had earlier in the 2010's was composed of three All pros, all 1st round picks.

The Cowboy should be using their 1st round picks on linemen and use their 2nd and 3rds if they want to stock up on skill players and CB's. I'm not saying that every lineman must be a 1st round pick but your lines should have a couple peppered in on each side.

Build the OL, and fill the running back depth chart with FAs and mid-round picks. Still, the most valuable piece is the QB, you take that talent when they are available.

I think your point is the exact reason you need to take skill positions / money positions in round 1 (OT, Edge, WR, CB). You get them cheap for 5 years.

A FA LG costs half as much as a skill position.

Obviously just don’t want to overreach.

Yup draft high dollar positions in early rounds and use them for cheap for 5 years and keep drafting.

Positions like 1Tech, OG, LB and RB can be signed for reasonable prices and/or found in the middle rounds.

Obviously your board has to take president and you can’t reach for certain positions, but in a perfect world you’re drafting QB, OT, WR, CB, DE, or elite 3 tech in the 1st 2 rounds

Yah, pretty much. Unless a stud like Zach Martin falls there’s a really good chance BPA at a premium position will be an option.
