usually after you calm down you have a different perspective the day after something like yesterday, but I still have these thoughts:
1) what the heck was Parcells thinking calling (or agreeing with) passing after Pettiti was called for a holding call to move us back again at the end of the game? We had done next to nothing throwing the ball all day, pass protection was poor and we needed a good 30-35 yds or so to even have a remote chance at a FG (and with as poorous a kicker as we have, even something inside 40 yds isnt automatic)...there were only 12 seconds or so left in the game...was Parcells high or something? was he not watching the same game we were? Bledsoe made an awful throw, but he shouldnt have been throwing there anyway...
2) when it became obvious that getting passes off clean early in the game was going to be a major issue, why wasnt the shotgun used on obvious passing downs? It wasnt used once to me recollection.
3) one other formation issue, we have been struggling to run the ball in short yardage and redzone (especially inside the 10 redzone) attempts all year...maybe instead of bunching everyone in a "tight" formation, we should try and spread the defense out with regular formations and then run running inside...we havent had a rushing TD in over a month (SF game) and we have an alarmingly high rate of failure converting 3rd and 1 or running inside the 10...I dont have the numbers, but I bet we arnt even converting 25% of these opportunities when we try to run the ball...
4) Jose Cortez and that deep snapper should both be unemployed by the end of the day...I said it early in the offseason and will keep on saying it, but we should have signed a decent veteran kicker to compete with Cundiff when we had the chance...if Cundiff would have won the job great, but if not at least we'd have had a dependable guy...Parcells has made no attempt to hide the fatc that he wanted to play conservative, ball control "ugly" type ball and win with field position and the kicking game, but that doesnt work if you dont have a good kicking game
5) its just amazing that we can play defense so good for 55 or so minutes most weeks, then completely meltdown time after time
6) Anthony Henry dropped two easy ints yesterday
7) one play that nobody has mentioned was the deep in type route Keyshawn ran (I think 2nd qtr) and he got away with a push off that wasnt flagged, he was wide open with nobody between him and a certain TD but Bledsoe threw a poor pass that wound up incomplete..had it been a good ball, Key would have scored easily...there was nobody in the middle of the field
8) how bad was the defense on that last drive? Seattle never even faced a 3rd down and Hasselback was 4/4..we didnt come close to a sack...they also converted a 1st and 20, continuing another horrendous streak of sorts as teams continue to convert very long yardage downs into first downs when games are on the line...we allowed a 4th and 15 on opening day, another 4th and 14 and a 3rd and 27 against the Skins...NYG went 50+ yds in two plays last week to score, the Seahawks used about 1:30 to move 81 yds against us yesterday
9) Marion Barber was pretty impressive and will be a solid backup for years to come, as well as a spot starter if need be...he's the only offensive player that I thought had a good game
10) we gave up 5 sacks yesterday according to the boxscore, 4 last week...thats 9 in two weeks now...and the Giants netted zero sacks yesterday vs Denver after routinely hitting Bledsoe last week
11) the right side of our OL played about as bad a game as you can play yesterday...I dont know whether Rivera's back is still an issue or maybe if he was just never that good and was overrated because he played in GB with Favre, but he's been a huge bust as a RG IMO...mediocre run and pass blocking, and several untimley penalties as well...the awful holding call he had yesterday was terrible, and he didnt even need to do it because Barber had already gained the first down...wiped out a really nice play...Pettiti was completely overmatched yesterday for the 2nd straight game...after a decent start to the season, it might be time to consider replacing him because he is not improving
12) everyone in the NFC East is a 1/2 game up on us now, and we have to go on the road to play all 3 of them the 2nd half of the season...we still have very tough games vs Denver, KC and at Carolina as well...to think that this is a playoff team at this point is pretty foolish...the Commander and Seahawk losses will come back to bite is in the arse bigtime at the end of the season...instead of 10-6 or 11-5, now seems more likely we'll finish 8-8 or 9-7 at best and miss the playoffs again
