If you are a Dale Earnhardt fan or a NASCAR fan you must watch this show. It will be replayed this weekend and likely more during the week on Speed Channel. I will give you one bit of advice, keep a tissue handy. What a great show.

The Day

On the tenth anniversary of the death of Dale Earnhardt at the 2001 Daytona 500, a chronological recount of the events of the day.

February 18, 2001; a day in NASCAR history that still evokes pain, tragedy and disbelief unlike any other even a decade later.

The Day: Remembering Dale Earnhardt takes viewers back to Earnhardt’s last day, from the pre-race ceremonies during which he gave wife Teresa and son Earnhardt, Jr. what would be a final hug on the starting grid before climbing into his black No. 3 Chevrolet, to the race, the fatal accident in turn four and the aftermath.

“No driver embodied the heart, spirit and competition of NASCAR like Dale Earnhardt,” said Patti Wheeler, SPEED Executive Vice President of Programming and Production. “When he died, a piece of the sport died with him. But the NASCAR community and race fans worldwide have kept his memory and dreams alive. Earnhardt was a champion in every sense of the word and remains one, even in death. We hope this look back at Feb. 18, 2001, conveys our collective respect for him.”

The special also explores Earnhardt’s history at Daytona, his relationship with car owner Richard Childress, his family, his DEI race team, his close friendship with Neil Bonnett, who died at Daytona in 1994, and other key players and events in Earnhardt’s life and career. Additionally, a variety of NASCAR stars and celebrities recount where they were when they first heard the news of Earnhardt’s death.

Unbelievable program. Brought back all of those memories. I watched that race with my dad as I did all the time growing up. The wreck at the end looked completely unremarkable. I'd seen Dale walk away from what appeared to be much, much worse.

I heard the news when I returned from seeing a flick...13 Days with Kevin Costner. To say I was dumbfounded and blindsided would be a severe understatement. Still well up to this day...and that program hits hard. There's some footage in there that I'd never seen.

NASCAR isn't the same. I still watch and rank it behind the NFL as my second favorite sport, but Dale was a legend. There's no one that comes close...not even Petty.

He died because he refused to wear the head-and-neck restraints. Subsequently, they were made mandatory after his death.

I still know several idiots that refuse to wear seat belts.

He died because of his helmet choice. Had he worn the full face helmet (like most drivers did in that day) he would have lived.

The restraining device may have saved his life (likely it would have) who really knows?

Only when my wife is in the car. Maybe 25% of the time. Maybe. Never when driving my truck to and from work.

Come on big dog, I thought you were smarter than that! If you have kids, you without question should be wearing it. They will need their father dummy!

You want to see some crazy stuff look up some racing videos from early Indy days. They didn't wear fire suits and didn't use seat belts. They didn't want seats belts because they wanted to be thrown from the car.

I had a tire blow out on I-10 with the windows down and no seat belt on. The truck went into the grass median and flipped several times. After I walked away from that wreck I swore I'd never be in a vehicle unbuckled again.

That wreck and death pretty much put Simpson out of business. Dale was a "tough guy"/hardheaded. He always loosened his belts and he did the same in that race. And yes, he was one of the last to wear the open face helmet.

It always sends chills down my spine when I see Ken Schrader run over to #3 and immediately knew he was dead. He never said it...but he knew.

It was a very sad day and I agree NASCAR has never been the same. The ironic thing for me was Dale was blocking others from making a run on Waltrip and Jr not something Dale did when it came to racing but he knew he did not have the best car and saw the oppertunity for his race team to win.

Same here. It was very telling at the time. I knew something was wrong when after he hit the wall, he didn't hit the brakes. He slid down the track and into the grass and never applied the brakes. I knew at that moment he had to be unconscious. Never Thought he was dead.

Not gonna lie. I cried off and on for quite a few days. I still tear up when certain clips get played on tv. He was like a connection between my father and I. Something we shared together. It was if # 3 was a way to always remind me of my dad and when Dale died a part of us died as well. My family has a racing history that dates as far back as race cars. I grew up at the local racetrack. I changed my number to 3 after he died and a lot of my friends call me "3".

He was the only driver I ever rooted for outside of Cale Yarborough. It was if the Cowboys had been removed from football.

Miss ya 3.

Very nice way to put it in to perspective.

Same here. My dad is/was a big Dale fan and he hasn't really settled on a driver since. He goes back and forth between Stewart and Johnson, but he'd tell you that NASCAR hasn't been the same.
