You would imagine that getting to play The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim for the first time is an enormous pleasure, but let me tell you a secret: it is not.

It probably will be for you, of course, because you will get to take your time playing with the character creator, running your fingers through the long grass and listening to water rushing downriver before you even have to think about following one of those tempting icons that keeps flashing up on your compass.

It wasn't unusual for people playing Oblivion to log well over 100 hours, and if you want to get the most out of Bethesda Game Studios' unique RPGs, you need that sort of time to do so. These are games where you create your own stories through exploration as much as you rely on the script, and you can't do that in a weekend or even a month of Sundays.

Meanwhile, at QuakeCon 2011, I get around 60 minutes to make sense of Skyrim. What follows is inevitably closer to panic than pleasure.

Complete Story (including a video)

Whoops, wrong forum! :laugh2:

WHERE!? ;)

To get back on topic...I've never really liked playing RPGs anymore. After Final Fantasy 7, it all went downhill for me.

You're missing out on some amazing RPGs if you don't play them anymore. While FF7 is one of my favorite games, I rarely play JRPGs anymore, and the western RPG has really taken over.

Fallout: New Vegas and the Mass Effect trilogy are some of the most rewarding video game experiences you'll find. Also The Witcher(1 and 2).

This will be a release day purchase for me. I thought Oblivion was good but their previous release in the elder scrolls franchise Morrowind was much better. Ive easily spent around 250-300 hours playing morrowind.

One thing i didnt like about Oblivion was that the loot/monsters were all level scaled to your character which took away some of the excitement of unknown areas and monsters.
Id also like to throw in another shameless plug for the Witcher 2 ..

Oblivion was great, but I may pass on skyrim. Mass Effect has taken all my RPG attention.

Yep.

I had a remade version of FF7 with a disk that would let you run it on Windows XP I picked up from a friend. Played it twice, but there was a slight glitch that wouldn't let you beat the Ruby Weapon.

Ah, the Chocobo races!

Never cared for these kind of RPGs. Played a few of the earlier games in the series and could never get into them (the first person perspective is a huge negative IMO). Generally, whenever I start an RPG and I have to create my character, I know I'm probably not going to like it, because I know it won't really be a character in a story, but just a puppet to control in the environment.

Games like Mass Effect I don't really consider to be RPGs in the general sense. Sure they have some elements, but I still don't think they qualify. They are more action/shooter to me.

I used to love RPGs, especially Final Fantasy, but it's hard to find a really good one anymore. I miss the old style with the huge world maps. Now the only ones left to use those are games from the Tales series, which is probably why they've been some of my favorites as of late. RPGs today also tend to start out much slower than they used to, and I'll quit playing out of boredom long before the story gets interesting. I guess that's one of the sacrifices made in order to appease the "non-linear" gods. I'll take linear every day of the week and twice on Sunday's thank you.

FF7 was good. I still have the case and games sitting in it at my moms house somewhere.

Another one I liked (But older) was Suikoden on PS1.

Loved Suikoden 1 & 2. Then they changed them.

It's funny that you say you want linear games, but you hearken back to the old final fantasy games where you had the open world map and less linearity. I miss the world maps too. Since FFX Final Fantasy just hasn't been the same. I've enjoyed each entry to a certain extent, but the world map was part of the magic of the JRPG to me. Now they're just like Bioware games that aren't as good.
