At some point in the near future we will be moving Tyler Smith the LT permanently. What happens with this move has been on every Cowboys fans minds since the offseason. Alot of clamoring (rightfully) about drafting a young OG to slide in to that spot eventually. We sorta did with Richards, but in the 5th round, it was really just a dart. We also added some better than usually OL prospects as UDFA's (Bass and Bostic). Although Bostic is likely an OT only. This camp and preseason has given fans some hope that the players added during the draft may actually have a chance at being a quality starter at the LG spot. Lets have a discussion about the two possibilities (Richards and Bass) that have stood out so far

For guards, and LG is expected to block a 3T on most downs and help protect a QB's blind side with the LT. Both Richards and Bass have plus athleticism for the position, and experience pass protecting against blindside rushers in college. I think if you are really looking to fortify your pass pro, both are quality candidates

Asim Richards: Haven't noticed him at OG, but he has looked very good at LT. He could also have a future here as a swing OT. Good length (34 inch arms), very strong lower body. He needs alot more upper body strength to play LG in the NFL. If he does add alot more upper body strength, I could see him being a real standout in the 2024 camp

TJ Bass: Very strong preseason from him. Played extensively at both LG and LT in college, finishing his career at LT. Definitely OG only in the NFL due to length. However 32 inch arms isnt below the threshold for OG's. Hand usage is his real calling card. Not super athletic, but good enough at LG and his experience at LT in the Pac 10 could help with more athletic 3t's.

haven't studied Asim but from a few snaps in preseason game I was impressed. particularly a play where it looked as though defender had gotten the edge and he was beaten but in an instant he was back in position. might be a legit T in development.

If he never becomes a starter, I could see him being a guy with a fairly long NFL career due to versatility

while quickness is important, never make that the primary reason to draft someone on the line. The Boys have taken way too many quick guys with no anchor that get pushed around and bull rushed.

What about the possibility of Richards at LT and just keeping Tyler Smith at LG?

I don't really understand why everyone wants to move Tyler to LT

He can be a physically dominant LG
I agree. I think it’s his best position. I think he can be a very good left tackle, but I think he can be a GREAT left guard.

It also looks like they could draft a guard or tackle in the 1st round of the next draft.
I think there’s supposed to be a deep offensive tackle crop coming up next year.

In 2027 our starting line will be Tyler, Edoga, Farniok, Ball and Richards.

And we will roadgrade.

I wouldn't hate it, but I dont know that the organization wants that unless they fall into a LT. I dont think Richards is a starting LT in the NFL

Right now I dont see Richards as a long term NFL LT. I dont think he has enough agility to do it well against everyone. I could very well be wrong, but thats just how I see it now

I see the opposite with him. I see good feet and plenty of agility. What I do not see is the strength and power necessary to play inside at guard.

Not necessarily I mean why would you think that we have to move Tyler Smith to left tackle what if aseem Richards actually turns out to be a solid left tackle of the future now we have our line pretty set.. I'd say let's just do this one here at a time you guys are getting way ahead of yourself I heard that Richard is not a very good guard he's not a very good candidate but he's a better tackle so why not use them as a swing tackle this year and see how he develops in spot duty I mean is there a reason Tyler Smith can't be the left guard I mean do you want not want a Hall of Famer at guard I mean didn't we move Larry Allen from tackle to guard I mean as long as we have good players at all positions but you can have still great to Hall of Fame type players somewhere along the line does it make that big a difference I mean you normally doesn't the defense just key in on your weak point they find a crack they're gonna go for it so no matter where you try to put your weakest player they'll find it and they'll go through it anyway so whether he's at guard or tackle you're gonna have to get by at one of those positions.
