The helmets have always been a problem and now they pad them for practice

Why don't they just do away with the hard helmet all together and use something like the padding that is protecting the helmet? Common sense if they didn't have the hard helmet they wouldnt lead with their head anymore. It's funny the NFL tries to do so much retroactive because of concussions and they will take away fun plays like kickoff returns but they wont just attack the root of the problem and fix the helmet issue. Billion of dollars industry with 10 cent brains.

Everyone has always known that head injuries are so prevalent in football because the helmet makes you feel superhuman and allows you to lead with your head. There is a reason why rugby can be pretty much as violent as football, but also have dramatically less head specific injuries and the reason is dudes don't use their heads as battering rams because they are unprotected. If you tried to make a tackle leading with your head w/o a football helmet you would be seriously injured.

That being said, football helmets are an iconic symbol of the game and likely will never deviate too far from what we have today. The helmet is never going to go away.

helmets already add a lot of weight and strain on the neck. Those pads have got to weigh a ton.

What most people do not realize or at least forget is the helmet is only protecting the player from skull fractures and contusions for the most part. Sure, it does help a little with preventing concussions or worse, but not nearly as much as people think it does.

Our brains are floating in our heads and padding alone cannot stop the inertia of our brains when our heads are moving and are abruptly and violently stopped.

New technology attempts to absorb some of the force of the hit, but ultimately football players cannot escape their brains snapping toward their skulls. Even after the initial hit, the ricochet/snapback effect can be even worse on the brain in some situations.

How sad will it be if the NFL one day learns that the old leather helmets that players wore decades ago resulted in a lot fewer concussions, brain/CTE damage, etc. than the state-of-the-art helmets provide today? .. and not because they offered better protection, but rather they provided more incentive for players to avoid slamming their heads together while tackling a player or running with the ball.

More padding, less shell. But I think we both know they're not messing around with the look. But if they can design the helmet to absorb some of the impact, it should cut down on concussions. Similar to a car's crumple zone that bounces back. But no matter how much padding they use, they'll never eliminate concussions altogether.

I understand complaining about helmets because they act as incentive to play more violently above the neck. That should seriously be investigated.

But complaining about the helmet padding for vanity reasons? Ugh, get a life.

Have there been studies done on this? I’m not arguing with you, I’m genuinely curious. Because I know there are a lot of rugby players suffering progressive CTE, it’s just not a major international or American sport so we don’t really hear about it. Some rugby players even wear thin padding for this reason and many have suffered serious contusions and lacerations from contact.

Also, would there be a plausible way for leather helmets to carry reliable face/jaw/eye protection?

If anything would work best, that would be it. It would definitely modify the way players tackle on defense.

That said, there is zero chance the NFL does it. Yes,vanity. They'll never risk losing money over it.

LVE said he thinks the padded helmets will cause lead to more injuries during the season.

Yeah, two different discussions. Theres is more towards using the padded helmets guards getting used to the extra cushioning and then unleashing in regular games and not having that extra padding. Mine is to do away with the hard helmet all together and come up with something like a solid padding, that would be pretty tight, not like those big ugly things they have now.

The better they attempt to construct a safer helmet, the more false sense of security that players have using such helmet. I don't ever remember old NFL players from the leather helmet era having mental or physical problems due to concussions. Has never been reported. Would be interesting to find out those stats. Of course, i do agree the NFL will never go back to wearing leather helmets even though it could actually be a solution. Then again players now are bigger, faster, stronger and in better physical shape year round.
